From The Team

Welcome back everyone! We hope you all had a terrific holiday and managed to stay warm. It has been a busy and fun start to Term 3, with production practice well underway, and starting our unit on the Olympics.

We have also been excitedly counting the days we have been at school, knowing our '100 Days of Learning' celebration day is just around the corner. Students are asked to dress up on the day as something to do with the number 100. This does not have to be an elaborate costume, just something simple representing the number 100 is fine (eg. a t-shirt with a 100 dots on it, or the number 100 written across the front of a t-shirt). Some students also choose to dress as if they were 100 years old. We look forward to this fun day of learning!

What We Are Learning

Reminders

  • Stockings: As part of our Procedural Writing unit in Week 4 we will be making grassheads and then writing the procedure that we followed. To assist with this we are asking for donations of any old stockings/pantyhose. Each child will need one to fill with cotton wool and grass seed. If you have any old pairs that you are able to donate, please send them to school next week.
  • Communication Folders: Please remember to bring these to and from school each day.
  • Reading Logs: Record your child’s nightly reading.
  • Red folders: Regularly practise reading or spelling their high-frequency words

What We Are Learning In Specialist Classes             In Term 3

Visual Arts

This term, Visual Arts will be taught by Mr Lachlan Byass, as Karen Coster will be on Long Service Leave for most of the term. Students will start the term making a folk art landscape exploring lines, shape, colour and perspective, and will create art inspired by The Olympic Games. Later in the term, students will view and create art inspired by one of the books short-listed for the Children’s Book Council of Australia ‘Book of the Year’.

Mandarin

To be advised when Ms Hou returns from Long Service Leave.

Science

During Term 3, students in Year 1/2 will be exploring the different materials that objects are made of, and describing their observable properties such as colour, texture and flexibility. They will be investigating why objects are made from certain materials, and will be looking at what physical changes can be made.

Performing Arts

In Performing Arts lessons this term, students will be rehearsing and performing multiple parts on the xylophone (bass and melody), responding to and replicating rhythmic patterns using 4/4 timing, singing, and playing the major scale using classroom instruments and developing their skills within a musical ensemble.

Physical Education

In Physical Education this term, the Year 1/2 students will be focusing on a variety of Fundamental Motor skills. They will be practising moving in different ways and directions using locomotor movements such as hopping, skipping, galloping, running and jumping. Later in the term, the students will be practising object control skills and will be learning the correct technique for catching objects, underarm throws and overarm throws.

Reader's Theatre

In the last week of Term 2, the students practised and performed a Reader's Theatre play to all Level 1/2 students. We saw fantastic performances of ‘The Three Little Pigs’, ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ and ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’. It was a great way to build confidence, fluency and expression.

What terrific actors you all are!

Persuasive Toy Ads

To complete our Persuasive Writing unit at the end of last term, the Level 1/2 students designed and created some very convincing posters about a toy of their choice. Their aim was to include as many persuasive techniques as they could!

3D Shapes

We have been enjoying learning about 2D and 3D shapes. Here the students are making 3D shapes using playdough and toothpicks.
