Year 11 Legal Studies Students Visit Goulburn Local Court

On Wednesday, the Year 11 Legal Studies students from Boorowa Central School had an enriching visit to the Goulburn Local Court, providing them with a firsthand glimpse into the operations of a local court in New South Wales. This educational excursion was a valuable component of their legal studies curriculum, aimed at enhancing their understanding of the judicial process.

The students had the unique opportunity to observe court proceedings, which offered practical insights into the daily functions and procedures of the local court. They were particularly interested in the variety of cases Magistrate Margaret Beattie presided over and the outcomes she delivered.

One of the most amusing cases for the students involved a man who had cultivated three cannabis plants. When questioned by Magistrate Beattie, the man explained that he had done extensive online research and believed it was legal to grow three plants, as per laws in the ACT. However, when asked how long he had lived in NSW, he admitted he had lived there all his life. And never lived in the ACT. The magistrate humorously pointed out that he should have researched NSW laws, where growing cannabis is illegal. The man also claimed he grew the plants for use but insisted he wasn't a regular user, only smoking on Friday and Saturday nights. Consequently, the magistrate fined him $450.

Two other intriguing cases involved dangerous driving. One individual was caught riding a motorcycle at 171 km/h in a 60 km/h zone, while another young male was caught driving at 141 km/h in the same zone. Each defendant pleaded guilty, resulting in a 25% reduction in their penalties. Both were fined $1500 and lost their licenses for 12 months.

The students also witnessed more serious matters, including two men on remand for assaulting their partners. Both defendants applied for conditional bail, but due to the severity of their charges, Magistrate Beattie denied their applications.

The experience was made even more insightful by their engaging discussion with Magistrate Beattie. She generously shared her extensive knowledge and experiences, covering various aspects of her work and the broader legal system. During her talk, Magistrate Beattie explained the challenges involved in the trial process, sentencing, and law reform. Her candid discussion highlighted the complexities and responsibilities that come with her role, providing the students with a realistic perspective on the legal profession.

Magistrate Beattie also detailed her journey to becoming a magistrate, offering inspiration and advice to the aspiring legal minds in the room. Furthermore, she elaborated on the distinctions between the Local Court and the District Court, enriching the students’ understanding of the different levels of the judiciary. Her insights into these differences were particularly enlightening, as they clarified the scope and jurisdiction of each court, and the types of cases they handle.

The visit was an invaluable educational experience, bridging the gap between textbook learning and real-world application. The students returned to Boorowa Central School with a deeper appreciation for the legal system and a renewed enthusiasm for their studies. This excursion not only enhanced their theoretical knowledge but also provided practical context, underscoring the importance of the legal studies program in shaping informed and engaged future citizens.

Boorowa Central School extends its gratitude to Magistrate Margaret Beattie and the staff at Goulburn Local Court for their hospitality and for providing such a comprehensive and inspiring learning experience.

Boorowa Central School Embraces AUSLAN Thanks to CWA's Generous Support

We are thrilled to announce that Boorowa Central School has taken a significant step towards inclusivity and diversity, thanks to the generous support of the Country Women's Association (CWA). Their funding has enabled us to offer an online course in AUSLAN (Australian Sign Language), which has brought a new and exciting dimension to our Languages Other Than English (LOTE) program.

With the CWA's contribution, our students have eagerly embraced the opportunity to learn AUSLAN. Their enthusiasm and dedication have been remarkable, culminating in the successful completion of their first assessment. Our students can now introduce themselves and engage in basic conversations, discussing their own interests and those of their peers. This achievement is a testament to their hard work and the invaluable support provided by the CWA.

The introduction of AUSLAN at Boorowa Central School is not just a language addition; it represents a commitment to creating a more inclusive environment for all our students. The positive impact of this initiative is already evident, with many of our teachers showing interest in learning AUSLAN. We hope that AUSLAN will soon become a widely used language within our school, promoting effective communication and mutual respect among all members of our community.
