Playing With Cards

Developing Mathematics From Playing Cards

Playing cards is a popular pastime from children and adults alike. They are an ideal piece of material to use to developing number work, problem solving, classifying, probability, and symmetry. Card games are also a fun way of improving childrens number work and number facts.

The Junior School are using 'child friendly' cards. These cards are specifically designed with geometric shapes that most children recognise in an easy to read format and contain cards numbered 0 to 13.

Grades 3-6 are using standard playing cards with additional 11, 12 and 13 spot cards.

Some games that we have been playing are: Hit the Deck, Snap +/-1, Counting Cards, Magic Cards. These games focus on learning and improving mental computation of number facts in a fun and highly motivational way.

Why not try some card games at home?

Or you could play Hit the Deck! All you'll need is a ceck of cards. Ace = one and picture cards equal 10, and 2-4 players.

Rules:

  • One plyer draws three cards from the deck and layd them face up on the table.
  • The first player to call the product of the three cards is awarded that number of points.
  • No points are awarded for an incorrect answer.
  • If three cards of the same suit or three cards o the same value turn up, then the first player to call out "Hit the Deck" and correctly multiply the three numbers receives double points.

Variations:

  • Draw two, four or five cards.
  • Use addition instead of multiplication.
