Transdisciplinary Theme: 

 How the world works 

Central Idea: 

Architecture around the world reflects different cultures, climates, and creative ideas. 

Lines of Inquiry:   

  • Architecture from various countries and how cultural traditions influence building design 
  • Different climates and environments influence building designs and materials available 
  • Artistic expression and unique architectural styles in building design 

Key Concepts:  

form and causation 

Learner Profile Attributes: 

open-minded and knowledgeable   

Students Will Create:   

  • Continuous Line drawing, keeping the pen to the page capturing a detailed city.  
  • Multi-media collage and colouring, inspired by the architecture of Gaudi
  • Construction using cardboard tubes to create an imaginative and decorated Skyscraper. Inspired by the architecture of Hundertwasser
  • Melbourne City Landscape drawings inspired by the artworks of Jan Sensberg’s city scapes
  • Clay African hut. Looking at the diversity of traditional architecture in Africa to capture shape and pattern

Japanese

Transdisciplinary Theme:

 How the world works 

Central Idea:  

Climate and the type of materials available determines the structures that can be built. 

Lines of Inquiry:  

  • The different materials used to build structures of Japan 
  • The way these materials influence the design of the buildings and structures in Japan 

Key Concepts: 

function, perspective 

Learner Profile Attributes: 

inquirers, knowledgeable 

Language Focus (Japanese):

 Japanese adjectives 

Students Will: 

  • Say and spell “HOUSE” in Japanese.  
  • Say and spell “BIG” and “SMALL” in Japanese
  • Describe a house with the adjectives (eg. big and small)  
  • Explain what Japanese houses are like correct alignment, technique and execution of skill to create effective expression and fluency of movement. 

Physical Education

How we organise ourselves 

Central Idea: 

Sport and communities bring people together.

Lines of Inquiry:   

  • The importance of fair play and sportsmanship and personal development in athletic type skills
  • The role of the Olympic games in our community and culture and how we all come together

Key Concepts:  

connection and change 

Learner Profile Attribute

Students Will:  

  • Be involved in athletic type activities incorporating running, vertical jump, leaping and throwing. They will use these skills in races, relays and minor games  
  • Learn correct alignment, technique and execution of skill  
  • Participate in a whole school Mini Olympics/Athletics carnival where students interact across all junior year levels with one another competing in a variety of events  
  • Revise the basic fundamental skills of throwing, catching and bouncing  
  • Concentrate on skills covered in semester one through interactive game play

Music

  • The effects that materials available has influenced instrument design 

Key Concepts: 

function, form 

Learner Profile Attributes:

Students Will: 

  • Make their own maraca for use in a ‘sound effects’ story. They will discuss their choice of materials and reflect on the effectiveness of their sound and design 
  • View a selection of orchestral instruments and discuss the choices of materials used
  • Demonstrate an understanding of both beat and rhythm

 

  • Be introduced to graphic notation and have opportunity to use this as they write their own informal percussion scores to perform. Students are understanding that one function of the written score, is to include others in playing along
  • Read the score to ‘Count the Beat’ and practice it for a class performance, using the percussion instruments. Students will be encouraged to recognise the form of the music they play along to
  • Learn to listen to instructions and work cooperatively in performance groups  
  • Play Chime Bars and learn correct technique
  • Dance two Australian folk dances accompanied by an ‘Aussie lagerphone’. They will also discuss the materials used and design of the lagerphone, to enrich their class unit of inquiry into ‘materials and structures’
  • Sing songs relating to unit of inquiry

Library

Familyhistories provide an insight into culture

  • Different types of families and their characteristics
  • Traditions and celebrations within families from different cultural backgrounds 
  • Family roles and responsibilities in various cultures
  • Similarities and differences in family structures and customs around the world

Students Will:  

  •   Revise how to shelve Picture Fiction
  • Reinforce their understanding about parts of the book – title, author, illustrator, spine and barcode 
  • Learn about end papers and why books have them
  • Discuss Picture Fiction call numbers and why they are certain letters 
  • Revise Picture Fiction section and introduce Easy Fiction Section 
  • Read and discuss texts related to our unit of inquiry
