Worthy drink bottle launch makes a sustainable splash
Last week, our Senior School assembly welcomed Angela Michel, founder and owner of Worthy Co, who shared her inspiring journey as a businesswoman committed to sustainability.
Angela spoke passionately about the impact of Worthy bottles – stylish, reusable drink bottles designed to reduce single-use plastic – and introduced the new SMC-branded edition now available for purchase.
Angela was interviewed by our Year 12 Prefects, Olivia Hunniford-Webb and Mia Reid, who, on behalf of the Prefect body, have chosen Worthy as a great partner to help make our school even more eco-friendly and support our sustainability goals.
Following the assembly, students and staff had the opportunity to purchase the bottles at a pop-up stall on the College Green. The SMC-branded Worthy bottles are also available through Murphy's Cafe, College Reception and the St Mary's Qkr! app.
The launch was a big hit, with a number of students and teachers excited to buy the bottles and show their support for helping the planet.
It was great to see so many people getting behind a positive change at SMC!
Angela shared: “I was so encouraged and reminded of the privilege it is to share our journey and inspire students to dream big and be bold enough to change the world.”
She also praised our school's broader sustainability efforts: “I was impressed by SMC’s commitment to composting, reducing waste, and embracing reusables in the Café – practical steps that make a real difference.”
For Olivia, who is leading this project as our Wellbeing Prefect, it isn't just about being sustainable.
"I want to help SMC go all-in on sustainability," she said. “That means making sure everyone has easy access to drinking water, not just for the planet, but for their own mental health and wellbeing too. It’s about doing good for us and the environment.”
Exploring the mystery of the Shroud at Guilford Young College
Our Life and Faith classes were recently privileged to attend The Man of the Shroud Exhibition at the Hobart campus of Guilford Young College.
On display was an extraordinary 14-foot life-size replica of the Shroud of Turin – one of the most intensely studied artefacts in human history, accompanied by rich insights from both scientific and theological perspectives.
Students were invited to reflect deeply on the evidence suggesting that the Shroud may very well be the burial cloth of Jesus Christ, and to contemplate the significance of his life, death and resurrection with both curiosity and reverence.
This immersive experience offered our young people a meaningful opportunity to engage with their faith intellectually and spiritually.
We extend our sincere thanks to all our dedicated Life and Faith teachers for organising and guiding this impactful visit – your commitment continues to foster growth, wonder and deeper faith in our students.

Italian students hop on espresso train
Our Year 9 Italian language students took a delicious detour from grammar to grind, brew and sip their way through a hands-on lesson in Italian coffee culture.
Using traditional moka pots, they crafted authentic espresso and of course, sampled their creations – deliziosa and full of flavour!
Next stop, Sydney! Work experience goes interstate
Ella Horne in Year 10 has taken her work experience to new heights, travelling to Sydney to complete her placement with Helly Hansen in their marketing division.
Working alongside the chief of sales, Ella gained an exclusive behind-the-scenes insight into the world of outdoor apparel marketing, exploring how major brands engage their audiences and the strategic thinking that drives their campaigns. What an amazing opportunity, Ella. Well done!
SMC alumni inspire the next generation
The College was delighted to welcome three inspiring alumni last week as part of the first in a series of Alumni Pathway Panels.
Speaking with students from Years 10–12 Pillars, our panellists Kylie Morgan (Class of 2003), Claire Bessell (Class of 1998) and Joey Walsh (Class of 1998) shared their personal stories working in hairdressing, accounting and medicine (anaesthesia), giving students a glimpse into the real world beyond school and the many ways a career can unfold.
The session was a great reminder that there's no single path to success and that what matters most is following your interests, staying curious and being open to wherever life takes you.
We extend our thanks and appreciation to Claire, Joey and Kylie for their honesty, wisdom and encouragement. It's always special when our alumni return to inspire the next generation!
We must also thank our Pathways and Course Advisor, Lucy Paske (also an SMC alumna), for her work in facilitating this opportunity.
