2025 NAPLAN Results

“Testing must serve students, not define schools. Principals want to use data to accelerate learning, not to navigate league tables.”

(Tina King – President APF VIC Branch).

The value of the 2025 NAPLAN results in providing a national snapshot of student progress is recognised however it must be emphasised that standardised testing alone cannot drive equitable educational outcomes. While media coverage has highlighted Victoria’s impressive performance across 18 of the 20 NAPLAN measures, the focus for our school leaders will rightly lie elsewhere.

Rather than engaging in comparisons between states or viewing the results as a competition, it is known that principals and their leadership teams will be turning their attention to what matters most.  NAPLAN data, when used appropriately, offers valuable insight into student progress over time. It enables school leaders and teachers to refine teaching practices, inform targeted interventions, and plan for differentiated support.

The true value of NAPLAN results lies not in headlines or league tables, but in how they help principals and educators strengthen outcomes for all students, particularly those who may require additional support to meet or exceed expected levels of proficiency.

School leaders remain deeply committed to using these insights as part of a broader, evidence-informed approach to educational improvement, centred on equity, growth, and high expectations for every student.
