KLA Feature - Science

Term 3 has been an exciting time in Science, with students across Years 7–12 exploring fascinating concepts, building their skills, and engaging in hands-on investigations.

In Year 7, students have been learning about forces and simple machines, exploring through practical experiments how different forces affect the world around us.

Year 8 students strengthened their scientific skills earlier this term and are now investigating energy types and transformations

Year 9 has focused on environmental sustainability, examining human impacts on ecosystems and exploring solutions for a more sustainable future.

In Year 10, students have delved into evolution, learning about adaptations, natural selection, and how species change over time.

Our Year 11 Biology students recently undertook a fieldwork excursion to Penrith Lakes, conducting a first hand study of local ecosystems. Using scientific sampling techniques, they collected and analysed biodiversity and environmental health data, linking classroom theory with real-world application.

Meanwhile, our Year 12 students have shown strong commitment in preparing for their HSC. This week, they sat their Trial HSC Examinations, demonstrating resilience and a deepening understanding of complex scientific ideas across the disciplines.

National Science Week 2025 brought a burst of excitement to the College as students participated in a range of competitions and events tied to the theme Decoding the Universe. These included:

  • Nature Photography Competition

Congratulations to our winner: Alison Tjahjadi (Year 7), whose photos captured a striking example of patterns in nature. Highly commended goes to Emily Oostelbos (Year 7), Lily Barbara (Year 10), Alice Berta (Year 8), Willow Briggs (Year 7), and Kirrily Cohen (Year 8).

  • Brian Cox ‘Forces of Nature’ Viewing Party

Students gathered to watch this fascinating documentary and reflect on the patterns and physical forces that shape our world.

  • Science Week Kahoot Challenge

Our top trivia champions: Karli Gunawan and Willow Briggs  (Year 7)– well done for your quick thinking and science smarts!

  • Microscopy Mystery Challenge

The winner of this image-identification challenge was: Eva Fanucchi (Year 12), who showed impressive analytical skills in identifying a wide range of objects under the microscope.

  • Code Breaking Challenge

Congratulations to Navroop Kaur of Year 10 (1st), Grace Yelland of Year 7 (2nd), and Amelia Gilani of Year 7 (3rd), who cracked the code fastest and proved to be our top codebreakers!

Australian Brain Bee Challenge

Congratulations to Liz Thomas (Year 10), who has progressed to the next level of the Australian Brain Bee Challenge. She will have the opportunity to visit the Museum of Human Disease and take part in a neuroscience workshop at the School of Biomedical Science at UNSW Kensington.

We are proud of our students’ curiosity, creativity, and effort this term — both in the classroom and beyond. We look forward to more exciting learning in Term 4!
