Year 3 News

Reading
This fortnight in Reading, Year 3 students have been learning how to find the moral or lesson in fiction stories. They have been looking closely at the choices and mistakes that characters make and thinking about what those characters could have done differently.
In class discussions, students have shared the advice they would give if they could step into the story and help the characters. This has helped them understand the story better and think about what the author wants us to learn from it, like how to make good choices or treat others kindly.
“The moral of a story is an important lesson that was learned. It can teach you about something.” - Kayan 3A
“I had fun learning about the moral of a story.” - Darcy 3A
Writing
In Writing, students finished their autobiographies. They wrote excellent paragraphs for each chapter of their lives. Starting with birth, early life, and school life, students finished with their current and future life before revising and editing. To begin the next week, students wrote narratives in their Writing Moderations. The Year 3 team has seen incredible growth in all of our students! They had a choice in how to publish their writing and their PowerPoint Presentations, texts, and posters all looked great!
Maths
This fortnight in Maths, Year 3 students have been learning about chance and probability. They’ve been using the language of chance, such as certain, likely, equal chance, unlikely and impossible to describe everyday events. Through hands-on experiments with dice and spinners, students tested their predictions and compared them with the outcomes, deepening their understanding of probability. Afterwards, they collaborated in small groups to create their own chance-based games. They then had the opportunity to play the games designed by their classmates, making the learning experience both fun and interactive. The students have truly taken a chance on learning —and it has paid off!!

“We need to add stripes.” - Storm 3C
Inquiry
In Inquiry, Year 3 students have been studying the climate zones of the world, including the interesting climates found in our very own Australia; Temperate, Mediterranean, Arid, and Tropical. They then studied the vegetation present in each climate zone including the flowers that grow in Australia. These are not always what you can find on other continents!
They also learned about how plants make oxygen through photosynthesis. Students then explored animals. Many class members found that their favourite animals were not suited to Australia, usually because they did not have the right adaptations.
Auslan
In Auslan, students participated in a review of the most important concepts covered in our signing classes. They also learned about all of the interesting facets of deaf culture. The deaf community has a vibrant and unique culture all its own, with a lot that may surprise people who are unaware of it! Students also loved the activities we played after learning our signs.
Social and Emotional Learning
This fortnight in SEL, Year 3 students have been learning about resilience by practising how to seek help from an available yard duty teacher. Through role plays, they explored how to solve problems independently and how to ask for help in a calm and respectful manner. Students also took part in a Find Someone Who… bingo activity, moving around the room asking classmates questions to discover shared and different experiences. The activity highlighted that everyone is unique, with their own likes, dislikes, and emotional responses to situations. Students discussed simple actions they can take each day to make sure everyone feels included, such as inviting others to join a game, listening to each other’s ideas, and showing kindness. By practising these actions and respecting differences, they help build a community where everyone feels welcome and valued.

Special Events
Dance Incursion
A highlight in Year 3 this fortnight was the Performing Arts Dance Incursion!
Students had the opportunity to move, groove, and express themselves through a fun and energetic dance workshop. Not only did students get to learn some new moves, but they also built teamwork skills and self-confidence in a lively and inclusive environment. There were lots of smiles and enthusiasm and many even wished the session could go on longer!
“It was so much fun dancing and learning new moves.” - Olivia 3A
“I had so much fun, they made it feel like it didn’t matter if it wasn’t perfect.” - Summer 3A

3A Assembly Performance
At the Week 3 assembly, 3A performed ‘Hot Cross Buns’ on the recorder as a whole class. They learned the song during music lessons in Performing Arts and were eager to share their talents with the CPS community. Throughout the unit, students have shown focus, discipline and resilience when learning the recorder, each trying their best and striving to improve their playing techniques. 3A delivered an amazing performance, following cues, playing in unison and keeping to the correct rhythm of the song. They received wonderful applause from the audience and should be proud of their efforts!
