Year 2 News

Reading
This fortnight in Reading, Year 2 students have made text-to-text connections by comparing the texts they read to other books, movies, or shows they have seen before. They noticed similar characters, settings, and themes, and discussed how the stories were alike or different. In addition, Year 2 students also made text-to-world connections by thinking about how the texts relate to real-world events or situations. These activities helped them understand the new texts better and think more deeply about what they were reading. Making these connections also supported the development of their reading skills and confidence.
This week, Year 2 have started to look at making inferences using clues from the text to show a deeper level of understanding. They have learnt how you can tell how a character is feeling by their body language, how they talk and how they are described in the text.
‘In Reading we were doing text to text connections and text to world connections. It was really fun, we all read and made connections. We read the book The Fearsome, Frightening, Ferocious Box and made connections.’ - Mya 2A
‘We have been making inferences looking at different clues to help us.’ - Mahrukh 2C
‘In Jeremy the bird felt happy and safe when the girl took him to school as he was smiling and was sat really still.’ - Nawaab 2C
Writing
This fortnight, Year 2 students have been writing factual sentences about a specific topic. They have been discovering facts about animals and turning those facts into simple and compound sentences in preparation for writing an information report. Year 2 have started structuring their work into paragraphs and have been looking at using subheadings to organise their writing. The students have been using nonfiction texts to find out new information and have used their own knowledge about a topic they like to construct their piece of writing. An amazing effort Year 2!
‘We have been writing about animals. My animal was a dog. I was writing about what staffies need to live.’ - Indy 2A
‘We have been writing about facts, not opinions about animals. I am writing about the features of a lion and why they have certain ones.’ - Indianna 2C
Maths
This fortnight in Mathematics, Year 2 students have now successfully completed their fractions unit, where they explored concepts such as halves, quarters, and eighths, and learned how to find equal parts of shapes and groups. The students showed great progress in understanding how to share and divide objects fairly. Building on this foundation, they are now beginning to explore equal groups as an introduction to multiplication and division. Students will be using objects, drawings, and hands-on activities to help them understand how to group and share numbers equally.
‘We have been doing fractions for three weeks. For one week we learned about halves, the second week we learned about quarters and the third week we learned about eighths. It was really fun. We used counters and teddies to make halves, quarters and eighths.’ - Zareen 2A
‘We have been learning about halving and finding quarters. Fractions have equal parts.’ - Indy 2A
‘Equally means sharing things so there is the same amount in each group’ - Guntas 2C
Inquiry
In Inquiry, Year 2 students have continued to look into the topic of living and non-living things with a focus this fortnight on animals and their observable features. They have been looking at a range of animals and grouping them based on what they can see. The students have also been learning about why these features are important and how they help animals survive in their habitat. For example, grouping animals together because they have wings and grouping others because they have scales.
In addition, they have been observing plants and their physical features. The students have been looking at what a plant needs to survive and how those features help.
"We were doing animal features and it was really fun. We were drawing lots of new animals. I loved this session. It was lots of fun!” - Mya 2A
“I had fun drawing animal features. First thing I drew was a bunny. I labelled the bunny and showed what colour they are.” Lexi 2A
“I drew a cat, a deer and a puppy also a koala. It didn’t take that long to make it. I was getting confused with the colours of the animals I drew, but still it was fun!” - Zareen 2A
“It was so so fun. We first drew a kangaroo, then a dog and last a duck.” - Georgia 2A
“We had lots of fun. I drew a flamingo and an axolotl. They were the same colour. I wrote lots of facts about the animals.” - Amy 2A
Auslan
This fortnight in Auslan, Year 2 students have been recapping all of their knowledge from the previous term. They have been going over people, animals, numbers and common words and practising in class, taking on the role of the teacher, working in pairs to share their understanding. Year 2 listened to a story that used the signs of words the students have learnt and they had to work out what the story was about. They were amazing!
‘I worked out the name of the dog was Max from looking at the person signing.’ - Emily 2C
Social and Emotional Learning
This fortnight in Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships students have been learning about respecting each other's similarities and differences. Year 2 students participated in a lesson where they played ‘Fruit Salad’ to help them understand that they are all different but they could also have similarities. During another lesson students created a poster about things that they like and shared the posters with their peers.
‘I really enjoyed playing the game. It was really fun.’ Amy 2A
Special Event
Performing Arts - Dance Excursion
Year 2 students took part in a fun and exciting dance incursion. First, they listened to instructions and had the opportunity to complete a series of dance moves to music. Next, they had the chance to perform these dance moves in front of their peers. The final challenge was to perform the dance moves while showing a specific emotion, and their peers had to guess which emotion they were expressing. It was a great opportunity for students to be creative, have fun, and build confidence
“It was really really fun doing the spin and dance with my friends.” Georgia 2A
