Years 7-12 House Swimming Carnival
Friday 15 August - 8.35am to 3pm | Hobart Aquatic Centre
The Years 7 to 12 House Swimming Carnival will be held at the Hobart Aquatic Centre on Friday 15 August from 8.35am to 3pm (please note earlier finish time). Students should wear their sports uniform and have packed swimmers, towel, goggles and a swim cap. Students are encouraged to accessorise their uniform with their House colours.
All students must attend for the entire day. Any appointments must be notified the day before to the Middle or Senior School offices. Students will be dismissed from the Aquatic Centre at 3pm and will need to make their own travel arrangements home. Please be aware that traffic around the Aquatic Centre can be quite congested at this time. Arrangements have been made for students travelling on country buses.
Students are to make their own way to the Aquatics Centre and sign-in at the table set up near the 50 metre pool. Students should then report to their House area. Should students be unable to swim, they are encouraged to help out with service on the day. If a student is unwell, please contact the Middle School or Senior School office by phone or email.
We encourage students to enter lots of events and enjoy being part of their House events as part of the larger Year 7 to 12 groups.
A program of events can be accessed here: 025 Aquatics Carnival program of Events. Parents are warmly invited to attend. The parking at the Aquatic centre is limited to 3 hours and we recommend using the overflow parking area at the regatta show grounds which are open for the day from 8am.
Staying Home if Unwell
There has recently been an increase in reports of illness such as Influenza.
We appreciate if students have symptoms, that they are kept home to stop illnesses spreading through the School. A list of common infectious illnesses and the required exclusion periods is available on the healthdirect.gov.au website at this link.
Middle School MS Read-a-thon
Well done Middle School team for an amazing start! We have 25 team members and have already exceeded our fundraising goal. The team has raised $1,015! More than half this total has been raised by one person - what a great example! It’s not too late to join and help raise money for families affected by MS. Join-up link below.

Sausage Sizzle for a Cause - TOMORROW
Friday 8 August - Lunch Time
As part of National Homelessness Week 2025, the Friends' Middle Campus Service and Wellbeing Committees are holding a sausage sizzle at lunchtime on Friday 8 August to support the Hobart Women’s Shelter Buy a Brick campaign. This initiative aims to build 25 new long-term homes for women and children in need of safe and affordable housing. 2 homes have been built so far.
Between 1 July 2020 and 30 June 2024, more than 4,500 women and children sought emergency support from the shelter. Sadly, eight out of ten were turned away due to limited capacity.
Sausages will be $3 each or two for $5, with a range of options available to suit different dietary needs. Cash and card payments available (cash payments preferred).
Hobart City Mission Excursion
As part of National Homelessness Week, Hobart City Mission has offered to take our Student Voice Council on a tour of their Safe Sleep Space shelter in Davey Street on Friday 8 August, from 12pm - 1pm.
This opportunity is designed so our students can learn about the causes and effects of homelessness in our community, and how we can work together to overcome the crisis. Note: Night Safe Space is not used during the day by clients.
Inspired by our Quaker values, students will collaborate on ideas for initiatives in the Middle School, including raising awareness and funds for Hobart City Mission at the Middle Campus. It is recommended that students pack their own lunch, in case of any delays that might impact the use of the canteen.
We ask that parents of students in the Student Voice Council please accept the Operoo permissions asap.
Please contact Essie Hoggart if you have any questions.
Uniform Reminder
As we are having a renewed focus on our uniform guidelines, we would like to ask students and parents for assistance. The full guidelines can be accessed here, but we would like to particularly remind families of the following:
- Only official uniform items bearing The Friends’ School logo should be worn once students enter school grounds, apart from free dress days. This includes non-uniform hoodies, tights (including Lululemon), caps and jumpers
- Students may wear small jewellery items and blemish-control makeup (colourful nail polish, lipstick or mascara are not permitted)
- Students may wear their P.E. uniform if they: Have a scheduled P.E., Drama, Dance or Connections class, an excursion or co-curricular sports. Otherwise, they should wear their Formal Uniform.
Thank you for supporting us in ensuring that our students represent our school community in a positive way.
Absentees
If your child will be absent from school for the day please advise the Middle School Office (phone: 6210 2235, or email: middleschooloffice@friends.tas.edu.au). We appreciate your support in this process.
