Where we are in place & time

Year 1 - Term 3, 2024

Transdisciplinary Theme

'Where we are in place & time'

Central Idea

Journeys have evolved over time

As an International Baccalaureate world school, authorised to teach the Primary Year’s Programme, we explore six transdisciplinary themes each year.

During this unit we will discuss the meaning of a journey and how travel has changed over time. We will look at a variety of modes of transport both past and present. We will explore the reason for change and the way these changes have affected our lives. We will ask the children to bring in artefacts such as photos, pictures and models of different types of transport to show its development.

Concepts

  • Form
  • Change
  • Causation

Lines of Inquiry

  • The different ways we can make a journey
  • The way our journeys have changed over time
  • Why transport has evolved over time

Action

Action in the PYP is initiated independently by the student as a result of the learning process. Action may be bringing a book or artefact related to the inquiry to school, or student-initiated drawings/posters/research. We celebrate our students’ ACTION every day in our classrooms. If you see your children taking independent action at home encourage them to share their action with their class.

Approaches To Learning

  • Research: Gathering information to develop an understanding of how transport has evolved. This could involve looking at pictures, watching videos, reading books from the library and home, or interviewing family members to gather information.
  • Thinking: Students will gather facts, ideas and specific vocabulary and learn to display their information using thinking tools such as mind maps and KWL charts. Students will analyse the similarities and differences between a variety of transport modes and understand the reason why things change over time. They will analyse different points of view and take into account cost, efficiency, leisure and environment when looking at the way people should travel.
