Fortnightly Curriculum Focus
Literacy: In Reading, Year 4 students are continuing with Book Club, focusing on new comprehension skills each week to further develop their understanding of the novel. We have also started a new class novel called The Boy at the Back of the Class by Onjali Q. Raúf. Students are encouraged to reflect on the events of this novel as a class and discuss the characters' emotions and major events throughout the story. They have begun working through reading fluency activities, which involve taking on a role in a reader’s theatre group where they need to read punctuation, change intonation, and take on the persona of their character.
In Writing, students have begun a narrative titled "An Everyday Hero." They are given chapter prompts and questions to assist in planning. Some of the prompts include character and setting development as well as the problem and solution.
Numeracy: In Numeracy, students have continued to expand their knowledge of Multiplication and Division through a variety of games, explicit lessons on different strategies, and problem solving. In the upcoming weeks, they will explore Area before starting our Fractions unit. Students will continue with weekly Number Sense Workshops through multiplicative games. They are also using online programs such as Essential Assessment to reinforce skills and target specific individual goals.
Inquiry: Students are beginning to explore “Australia and our Neighbours.” They have studied the differences between natural and man-made landmarks, researching famous Australian landmarks to pinpoint on a map. They have been immersed in the Olympics, researching athletes and sporting events.
Willy Kids & Child Wise: Our fortnightly focus has been: "Willy Kids are Brave." Students have reflected on what bravery means and how it can look different from person to person. They have shared daily reflections on when they have shown bravery and what they have achieved as a result.
In Week 4's Respectful Relationships lesson, we have been exploring gender norms through the lens of traditional fairy tales.
Kitchen Garden Program: This semester, students have started the Kitchen Garden Program. In this program, they will learn the fundamentals and expand their knowledge of cooking and gardening. In Week 3, students made some bread rolls to enjoy.
Bullying No Way! Week:
This week, in recognition of Bullying, No Way! Week, students have explored what Bullying means and the impacts this has on an individual, their family and themselves. Students have had the chance to learn where to go and what to do if someone gets bullied and how we as a class, cohort and school can support each other if ever faced in this challenging situation.
Reminders:
- Students are reminded to bring fully charged devices to school each day.
