Celebrating and Respecting Diversity - Being proud of who we are

Wear it Purple Day

This year, Williamstown Primary School staff and students would like to acknowledge Wear it Purple Day. When we acknowledge and celebrate the Wear it Purple organisation, we strive to foster supportive, safe, empowering and inclusive environments for rainbow young people. By wearing purple, Australians demonstrate to rainbow young people that they are celebrated and respected, acknowledging all have the right to be proud of who they are and who they are becoming.

We feel that this is an important day for our community to acknowledge, so students are invited to wear purple on Friday August 30th to show their support. Our Respectful Relationships focus for this term is Gender Identity, and so students will naturally discuss age appropriate gender related themes with their classroom teachers.

National Week of Action Against Bullying

It is fitting that two weeks before Wear it Purple Day is the National Day of Action Against Bullying on Friday 16th August. As a school community, we acknowledge this day every year by discussing bullying in our classrooms and finding ways to educate our students. The theme for 2024 is 'Everyone Belongs'. This important week is Australia’s key bullying prevention initiative and connects schools and communities to find workable solutions to prevent bullying.

When we all feel like we belong, bullying struggles to find a place. It's about embracing who we are, respecting everyone's differences and standing up together against unkindness.Belonging means we all have a role in preventing bullying. We're encouraged to speak up and create a safe place where everyone feels supported and respected, and our voices are heard and valued.

As it turns out, The National Week of Action Against Bullying founders have decided that purple is their colour! It is wonderful that two agencies have causes that fit so well together, and that as a school we can support them with actions and conversations.
