  • Analyse data and maps to identify disaster-prone areas.
  • Develop practical skills in emergency planning including house safety plans and emergency kits.
  • Apply learning in information reports, inquiry projects, and persuasive writing advocating for preparedness. This unit promotes research, writing, data interpretation, and critical thinking, helping students understand how disasters shape communities.

Year 6 Mathematics

Students will engage with mathematical concepts and apply problem-solving skills across the six core strands of the Victorian Mathematics Curriculum 2.0:

• Number  Understanding and working with whole numbers, place value, fractions and decimals, percentages, factors and multiples, and efficient computation strategies (mental, written and digital).

• Algebra  Recognising and using patterns, expressing situations with variables and simple equations, and modelling relationships using tables, rules and graphs.

• Measurement  Using appropriate units to calculate and compare length, area, volume, capacity and mass, as well as interpreting and measuring time and temperature.

• Space  Exploring 2D and 3D shapes, angles, symmetry, location, transformations, mapping and the Cartesian plane.

• Statistics  Collecting, representing and interpreting data using a range of displays, and analysing measures such as mean, median and mode.

• Probability  Describing and predicting the likelihood of events, conducting chance experiments and comparing theoretical and experimental outcomes.

• Mathematics in Practice (Money and Financial Literacy)  Applying mathematical knowledge to real-world contexts such as budgeting, financial planning and decision-making.

Students will also build critical and creative thinking capabilities by applying mathematical reasoning to real-world problems, interdisciplinary tasks and practical investigations.
