Topic 5: Check for understanding strategies in the classrooms

Last time, we discussed the importance of reviewing learning and we will now talk about the importance of checking for understanding. Good teaching means regularly checking that students understand what they’re learning. This helps teachers decide what to do next in lessons, and it also keeps students engaged and learning more effectively.

What’s Checking for understanding?

Teachers pause multiple times throughout the lesson and ask students to demonstrate their learning.

Why is it so important?

  • We cannot see students’ thinking or learning therefore we cannot assume that it is taking place.
  • Teachers are able to catch any misconceptions in a timely manner, rather than waiting for the end of a lesson/unit.
  • It helps teachers respond to the learners in front of them and supports them in making sound decisions on how and where to differentiate

How are we doing this in our classrooms?

Teachers ensure they are engaging and involving all students during ‘checking for understanding’ rather than always calling on one or two students.

  • Increase use of mini-whiteboards during lessons, where students can show their learning frequently throughout lessons
  • Quick quizzes and self-assessment questions are used such as ‘thumbs up or down’ to show their understanding.
