Transition into 2026

Transitions are an important part of every child’s school journey. Whether it’s moving up to a new year group, joining a new class, or transferring to a different school altogether, change can bring a mix of excitement and uncertainty. For many children—particularly those who thrive on routine—these changes can feel daunting.

At St Mary's we recognise that helping children feel secure and prepared for transitions sets the foundation for a confident start. One effective approach we use to support this process is through social stories. Alongside the use of social stories, we will also offer additional visits and time with the 2026 teachers and LSOs for students who require it.

How Do Social Stories Help with Transition?

Social stories help by:

  • Reducing anxiety – Children know what to expect, which helps lessen uncertainty and worry.
  • Building understanding – They provide clear, concrete explanations about what will happen, who they will see, and what is expected of them.
  • Encouraging independence – With greater confidence about upcoming changes, children are more able to manage transitions independently.
  • Supporting all learners – While especially useful for children with additional needs, social stories benefit all pupils by making transitions predictable and positive.

What Might a Transition Social Story Include?

  • Photos of the new classroom, teacher, classmates or bag area
  • Descriptions of daily routines and expectations
  • Reassuring messages about feelings (“It’s okay to feel nervous about meeting new people.”)
  • Positive outcomes (“I will learn new things and make new friends.”)

Working Together

Parents and carers can play a key role by reading social stories with their child at home. Talking about the upcoming changes in a calm, positive way helps reinforce the messages shared at school. Teachers and support staff also work together to create consistency between home and school, ensuring every child feels ready and supported.

If your child receives a social story, a hard copy will be sent home on the afternoon of our school wide transition day - the 9th December.

Most importantly, transitions are stepping stones in a child’s learning journey. With the right preparation and tools we can turn change into an opportunity for growth, confidence, and excitement about what’s to come. If parents/carers model that change can be exciting and they offer supportive language around transition, children will feel more confident and supported.
