ACS and University of Notre Dame Partnership-2025
In Term 3, 2025, we had the pleasure of welcoming eight prac students from the University of Notre Dame into our Tamworth schools (Primary and Secondary) for their 10-week final internship placement.
This valued partnership with the University of Notre Dame is designed to support and nurture these aspiring educators in the same way we support our Early Career Teachers. Each student was appointed as a conditional teacher and completed our full onboarding and induction process, just as any new staff member would.
As part of their experience, we had the privilege of showcasing our wonderful Western Schools on a four-day tour, during which we visited nearly 50 classrooms. Schools included on the tour were:
- Sacred Heart, Boggabri
- St Francis Xavier’s, Narrabri
- St Joseph’s, Walgett
- St Joseph’s, Wee Waa
- St Mary’s College, Gunnedah
- St Xavier’s Primary School, Gunnedah
- McCarthy Catholic College
- St Joseph’s, West Tamworth
- St Edward’s, Tamworth
- St Nicholas, Tamworth
Feedback from the students was incredibly encouraging. One remarked, “It’s so incredible to see how unique each school is, but amazing to witness how consistent each classroom operates—even across different schools.” Another shared, “I am amazed at the collaborative approach and how much support is available.”
Returning from the tour, we were humbled by the students’ gratitude and their glowing reflections on their experiences. This group of prac students demonstrated great professionalism, passion, and potential—and we are delighted that all eight have expressed a desire to remain within our system as graduate teachers.
Looking ahead:
- Two students are set to begin in Walgett in Term 4.
- Two are interested in ongoing opportunities in Gunnedah.
- The others are engaging in casual blocks and actively monitoring advertised positions.
We sincerely thank everyone who made this placement such a success. This program not only highlights the strength and unity of our Diocese, but also affirms our commitment to mentoring and supporting the next generation of educators.
A special thank you to our Early Career Teacher Team for guiding these students throughout their placement. To our schools, principals, and staff who hosted and supported them—you have truly exemplified what it means to be a welcoming and nurturing school community. Your support has made a lasting impact and is a key reason why these young educators are eager to return.
Thank you all for your continued dedication and for making this program such a positive and meaningful experience.
