School Wellbeing Focus: The Importance of Help Seeking

To begin Term 4, our current wellbeing topic and focus is on Help Seeking. This is a vital skill that is fundamental to overall mental health and wellbeing.

This topic is designed to teach students that seeking support when they face problems that are too big to solve alone is a normal and important coping strategy. We are actively working to normalise and destigmatise asking for help within our school community.

What Students are Learning

Across all year levels (Prep to Year 6), learning activities focus on these key areas:

  • Identifying the Need: Students engage in scenario-based activities to identify different types of problems and understand when a situation requires reaching out to someone else.

  • Finding Trusted Sources: We help students identify the various trusted sources of help available to them, including at school and out of school

  • Practicing the Skill: Students practice the actual language and methods for asking for support

Why This is Important

Research shows that fostering help-seeking behaviours through school programs is an effective way to improve student wellbeing. We know that young people often turn to informal sources like friends and the internet, even for serious problems.

By teaching this unit, we aim to:

  • Increase Awareness: Ensure all students know who their trusted adults are at school and home.

  • Empower Them: Give students the confidence and skills to ask for support from both peers and adults when they need support.

We encourage you to talk with your child about the trusted people in their life and reinforce the message that asking for help is a sign of strength and self-awareness.
