Welcome back to Term 4 in Foundation and Grade 1 at St Patrick’s! We hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful break and is ready for an exciting, jam-packed term ahead. There’s so much to look forward to as we continue to learn, grow and celebrate our achievements together.

In Literacy, our Foundation students will continue developing their early reading and writing skills through InitiaLit–F. They’ll keep practising blending and segmenting sounds to read and spell simple words, as well as building confidence with sentence writing. Our Grade 1 students are working through InitiaLit–1, where they will focus on extending their grammar and spelling knowledge, learning new digraphs and spelling patterns, and becoming more fluent, confident readers.

In Mathematics, we have now completed our unit on skip counting and are moving on to learning all about Data. Students will explore how to collect, organise and represent data in different ways — including using tally marks and picture graphs — and will discuss what the data shows through simple interpretation and comparison activities.

This Friday, we are very excited to be leading Class Prayer in the church. The students have been practising beautifully and are looking forward to sharing prayer and reflection with our school community. Families are warmly invited to join us as we celebrate this special moment together.

We can’t wait for a wonderful Term 4 full of learning, faith and fun!

Grade 2: Miss Wooden

This month, our classroom focus has been on the important theme of kindness, as taught in various religions. We believe that understanding and practicing kindness not only enriches our own lives but also creates a more compassionate community. Throughout the weeks, students engaged in lively discussions about the teachings of kindness found in different faiths, such as the concept of “loving your neighbour” in Christianity.

Learning fractions can be an exciting journey for students as they discover how to represent parts of a whole. Through engaging activities and hands-on experiences, students practice identifying, comparing, and manipulating fractions in various contexts. They are focusing on halves, quarters and eighths of shapes, lengths and time.

In literacy, we have been learning about monitoring while and after we read. Monitoring our reading is an essential practice that helps us deepen our understanding and retention of the material. By regularly checking in on our comprehension, we can identify areas where we might need to slow down, revisit, or reflect on what we've read. This process can involve asking ourselves questions about the text, summarising key points, or making connections to prior knowledge.

Grade 3: Mrs Stock

We are very excited to welcome Joshua to our class this term! He has joined us from India, and it’s been wonderful to see all the students making him feel so welcome. Everyone has been very impressed with his beautiful handwriting and we’re sure he’ll be earning his pen licence in no time!

In Mathematics, we’ve been finishing our unit on Addition and Subtraction, with a special focus on Money. This week we’ve started our new topic on Data Investigation, where students have been learning to:

  • Collect and record categorical data
  • Develop questions to collect data
  • Conduct a survey and record results in a list
  • Use tallies to count
  • Organise data into a frequency table

In Literacy, we are almost halfway through our class novel Charlotte’s Web. The students especially enjoyed reading a few chapters outdoors in the sunshine last week. Up in the fort was a favourite spot! They have also been busy working on their own narrative stories, with their introduction and action paragraphs already completed.

It’s been a wonderful start to the final term of the year, full of enthusiasm and great learning!

Grade 4: Miss Dove & Mrs McKiernan

We’re so happy to be back for our final term in Grade 4! It’s hard to believe how quickly the year has flown by. This term, students will continue to strengthen their reading, writing, and maths skills while engaging in a range of fun and meaningful activities across all learning areas. Everyone has settled back in with great enthusiasm, and we’re looking forward to a wonderful final term filled with learning, creativity, and teamwork as we wrap up the school year.

This week in Grade 4, we’ve begun exploring The Wild Robot by Peter Brown. Students have been captivated by the story of Roz, a robot who finds herself alone on a remote island and must learn to survive in the wild. The students are enjoying sharing their thoughts and predictions about Roz’s journey, and it’s been wonderful to see their creativity and critical thinking in action.

Our first topic for Grade 4 Maths this term is Data Investigation. We have been organising and analysing data to answer questions and solve problems. The focus has been on creating and interpreting pictographs and column graphs. Students have also been developing relevant questions based on data and using spreadsheets to record, calculate, and analyse their findings. It’s been exciting to see students apply their learning to real-life situations and work collaboratively to investigate and interpret data.

This term in Religious Education, our beginning unit is 'Reaching Out and Serving Others.' During this unit we will explore the concept of loving service and relate it to mission, based on Jesus’ example. The students really enjoyed watching The Kindness Boomerang, a short film that shows how small acts of kindness can create a ripple effect. It demonstrates that when one person does something kind for someone else, it often inspires that person to pass kindness on to others. Over time, these small actions can spread widely, creating a positive chain reaction that can impact many people. The clip highlights the idea that kindness is contagious and that even small gestures can make a big difference in the world. It’s definitely worth a watch if you haven’t seen it before!!!

Grade 5-6: Miss Rasmussen

It’s hard to believe we’ve already reached the final term of the year and the final term for our Grade 6 students before they begin their high school adventure.

In English, we’ve loved getting into the action part of our text The Grandest Bookshop in the World. We’ve been completely caught up in the high-stakes game the Cole children are playing with the Obscurosmith as they try to save their father’s life and the bookshop. We’ve also started planning our own narratives that include magical elements and a touch of historical fiction. There are so many cool ideas floating around the room, and it’s been great to see everyone so inspired by what we’ve read.

In Maths, we’ve just finished our measurement unit where students were challenged to use the base ten number system to convert between different units of measurement using multiplication and division. Next up, we’ll be learning about time, including converting to 24-hour time, reading timetables and working out elapsed time.

We’ve already had a few highlights this term including a much-celebrated answer in Maths equalling 67, our 5/6 Summer Sports day and some of our students competing at the Regional Bowls Competition. It’s shaping up to be a busy and exciting end to the year for everyone.
