STUDENT  LEARNING

Celebrations of learning at Lucas Primary School

Year 5 & 6 in Term 4

We have already had an incredibly busy start to Term 4. Our Year 5/6 students participated in Earth Ed: Battle Bots, the Year 5 Costume School at Sovereign Hill and the Year 6 Transition Program. All of the students worked incredibly well and showed great determination and resilience throughout each excursion. They did us proud.

Earth Ed - Battle Bots

At Earth Ed, the Year 5/6 students, constructed and built their own code to compete in a Sumo battle with their robots. The students created their own algorithm of loops and sequences to direct their robots. Each student used problem solving skills when there was an error in their code and ensured their robots completed the steps that they wanted.

We would like to thank Steve, Jess and Rachael from Earth Ed for facilitating these sessions.

Our Battle Bots winners were Rebecca, Ruby K, Olivia, Taku and Steve and Adiyat.

Year 5 Sovereign Hill School

Our Year 5 students travelled back in time to the year 1854 and became part of the Sovereign Hill living museum. They learnt about what life was like on the goldfields and how children of the 1850s were treated. Our students participated in the Wesleyan Day School and the Ballarat Benevolent Asylum Ragged School. Each school had their own positive and negatives, however, all students got into character and enjoyed their time back in the olden days. They were extremely glad when we returned to the Year 2025 at the end of each day.

We were lucky enough to watch a gold pour, practise mining for gold and learn skills like sewing and rope tying. Each student practised writing with ink for the first time and a few unlucky students were not allowed to write with their left hand.

Year 6 Transition Program

In Week 1 of Term 4, our Year 6 students participated in a transition program that was designed to help them feel more prepared for their transition into Year 7. During the program, students engaged in tasks that allowed them to reflect on their primary schooling, develop questions about the transition to secondary school, develop their organisation skills and reflect on their social skills. All students were engaged in each task, and it was great to have all the Year 6 students together.

Coming up this term, on Thursday, 23rd October, students will be going on an excursion to Ballarat High School to see the facilities and meet some of the staff. There will be a tour of the school and activities run by Year 10 students. There will also be a BBQ lunch provided by BHS. Following this, an information session will be held at school on the same night, at 5:30pm, for parents and students. Please come along for a chance to win one of 4 double pass Showbiz Vouchers.
