Volleyball Grand Finalists
The Year 10 Gold Volleyball team participated in the Year 9/10 SSATIS Grand Final on Monday afternoon, in a thrilling encounter at Hilliard Christian School. Hilliard finished the roster undefeated from 8 matches so were hot favourites going into the match. The two teams played each other in Round 8, with Hilliard winning in straight sets, so Mount Carmel knew it would be a tough match.
After a lunch time training with Volleyball Tasmania coaches, the team was ready to do battle. The first set was a close encounter until Hilliard won a string of serves to finish 25-15. This didn’t deter Mount Carmel, coming out strong in the second set. Again, it was a close affair, with brilliant rallies until Mount Carmel reached the target first, winning 25 – 22. This took the match into a final set, with Hilliard eventually serving strongly to win 15 – 10.
Congratulations to the team for making it that far, and putting up a brave fight. The team included Jenny Bangu-Ujang, Liz P’Oryem, Lucy Mauafu, Summer Lauderes, Hannah Mahmoud, Esther Dance and Zoe Wilkinson.
Secondary Cricket
This term, Mount Carmel has been participating in the SSATIS Secondary Cricket roster on a Thursday afternoon. Many students were playing competitive cricket for the first time, and did a wonderful job, often coming up against older students, including some with Club experience.
The team enjoyed some success along the way and showed improvement in batting, bowling and fielding as the roster progressed, eventually finishing the roster in 4th place on the ladder.
Congratulations to Scarlett Henderson, Year 8 who was the top run scorer for the team, and 2nd highest in the competition with 84 runs. Thanks to Kirsten Allen for her time coaching and umpiring.
Secondary Soccer
Mount Carmel was represented in the SSATIS Soccer roster this season, with 3 teams, including a Year 7, Year 7/8 and Year 9/10 team. The teams all had some hard-fought battles, and enjoyed some great success along the way.
The Year 9/10 team finished on top of the ladder, with and unbeaten run until the important Semi Final. Unfortunately that coincided with the Outdoor Camp, and some transport challenges made preparations less than ideal. The final result was a 3-2 loss to 4th placed Friends’, which meant missing out on a place in the Grand Final.
Mount Carmel Navy in the Year 7/8 roster did extremely well in their roster, considering they were often short on players. Gold in the Year 7 roster saved their best for last, defeating Fahan Blue 8-0.
They (Fahan) had 10 players, our girls chose to drop 1 to make it fairer (their call, couldn’t be prouder!) and they played sensationally. Testament to their hard work, perseverance and growth over the last 6 weeks.
Madi Seeber-Peattie - Coach
Both teams finished their rosters in 3rd place on the ladder, narrowly missing out on a place in the Grand Final.
Thanks to Coaches and Managers, for their time and expertise this season, including Madi Peattie, Pina Angelone, Brian Nielsen, Christy Dorward and Mark Broadbent.
Primary Soccer
The JSSATIS soccer roster concluded on Thursday last week. Well done to everyone that gave it their all at soccer, and especially to those that were giving it a go for the first time. I hope the students had lots of fun and families enjoyed watching them.

Primary Tennis
The JSSATIS Year 5/6 tennis roster has now drawn to a close. Well done to the participants in the team which included Mila McLennan, Year 4, Elise Hutchinson, Year 5 and Olivia Creese, Year 6. The team showed noticeable improvements in serving and game awareness as the roster progressed. The players also displayed great sportsmanship and understanding, particularly with inexperienced opponents. Special thanks to Lana Hutchinson for supervising and organising the players into games.
STCPSSA Swimming Carnival
Last Friday, the Primary Swimming team took part in the STCPSSA (Catholics) Inter-school meet at the Doone Kennedy Hobart Aquatic Centre. The team was competing in their second carnival, and it was clear they were more comfortable, and had overcome some of the nerves. Well done to everyone that swam, and competed so strongly. Special thanks to Kyra Lloyd, Year 6 who assisted with the marshalling of students for their events, and Mia Gray, Year 4 who recorded all the ribbon winners.
