Inspiring Girls Workshops

Inspiring Girls is an organisation dedicated to raising the aspirations of girls around the world by connecting them with female role models from all walks of life. Throughout term 1, a selection of girls from Year 10 attended a series of workshops to help them understand their potential, explore the variety of careers and options in life, and inspire them to chase their goals.

Over the term, our Year 10 girls explored the following modules.

  • Module 1 - Dreams (exploring personal values & strengths)
  • Module 2 - Worth (building self-esteem & confidence)
  • Module 3 - Muse (the value of role models)
  • Module 4 - Truth (building resilience)
  • Module 5 - Journey (presenting their visual board of personal growth)

Our students came away with incredibly valuable personal insights and great advice from guest mentors. All of our Year 10 girls will have the opportunity to attend the Inspiring Girls workshops which will run each term.  Thank you to Jeanine Innes and Vanessa Lattanzio for sourcing this opportunity and encouraging our girls to attend the workshops.

Year 10 Lawn Bowls

During our year 10 Health and PE unit, we have partnered with the Doncaster Lawns Bowls Club to provide our year 10 students with the opportunity to participate in sport for life long physical activity. Our students have used this opportunity to understand how sport can connect all dimensions of health and wellbeing, keeping us physically well, making social connections and helping us manage our mental health and wellbeing.

Student reflections:

Our first lesson of lawn bowls was not what I expected! The team at the Doncaster Bowling Club did a good job to teach us how to play the game successfully, they were eager to share their tips and tricks with us. Pete, the head teacher, did a great job to make the excursion, not only fun, but also educational. He also added some humour to the activities! Overall, it was a great experience, and I can’t wait until next week!

This experience is not all about improving physical health. Lawn Bowls can lead to improvements throughout all five dimensions of health. To begin, playing lawn bowls (which increases your physical health and wellbeing), can lead to you making friends (increasing your social health and wellbeing), which then makes you feel a sense of belonging (increasing spiritual health and wellbeing). This makes you feel happy (increasing emotional health and wellbeing), and you feel positive and optimistic (increasing mental health and wellbeing).

On Tuesday the 27th of February after our little misdirection/detour from Mr Brown’s navigation skills we went for our first session at Doncaster Bowling Club to learn about lawn bowling. For our one hour session Peter, our host, taught us the basics of lawn bowling, during this we learnt to focus on accuracy and trying to use less power to get the ball near the dot. After training and getting more accustomed to lawn bowling we did a competition amongst the group to prove just how well we honed our skills. In the end we are all looking forward to the next time we head back, although this time we will not have Mr Brown leading the group so as to not get lost.

Today was our trip to Doncaster Bowling Club, Mr Brown somehow didn’t know where we were going and had to use Google Maps. When we got there, we were greeted with kind smiles and a quick intro to what we would be doing. The man (Peter) asked us a few questions like who had done lawn bowls before and who thought that lawn bowls were just for old people, somehow, I was the only person to put my hand up. Before we started Peter asked us to get put into groups of two, I went with Carl, and we started doing lawn bowls. We started with just rolling the ball back and forth between the people working there who were helping each of us to help better improve our skills of speed, power and accuracy which turned out to be fun when we got the hang of it. After doing that for a little while Peter asked if I wanted to do the scoring of the next activity which was rolling the ball into a skinny rectangle which was challenging at first but most of us got the hang of it. The scoring part was easy but doing the math part and making sure the numbers looked like the numbers were the hard part. We finished that activity of then we said our goodbyes to the people working there. The little trip was enjoyable but, on the way, back somehow Mr Brown still nearly went the wrong way and we had to tell him that we were going the right way.

Year 10 Revive Day

On Wednesday 27th March, our Year 10s were rewarded for all their hard work and learning growth in term 1 by participating in their first REVIVE DAY. In the morning, students headed to the Performance Centre to listen to a presentation from the Victoria Police on how safe partying. After that, they all headed to the Senior Centre for student-led activities which you can see in the video below.
