Year 3

Hello from 3H

Happy Term 2 and what a fantastic first few weeks we have had in 3H! The kids have come back from their well-deserved holidays with positive mindsets and can-do attitudes.

In Mathematics we have been focusing on our new learning units of fractions and decimals and mapping and measurement. The students were introduced to these units with a fantastic inquiry concept. We spent some time using maps of the world looking at the distance it would have taken the ANZACS to travel from their homes in Australia, all the way to Gallipoli. We then incorporated some fractions and percentages into mapping by playing the ‘Throw the Globe' game. Students took turns throwing a world globe to each other. They then needed to record the location of their index finger when they caught it. The used tally marks to note down if their finger was pointing to land or sea. A question to all the adults out there, do you know how much of our planet is covered in water? Because 3H knows!

In Literacy, 3H have been enjoying the chance to explore a range of different texts, including the series of ‘That’s Not My Hat’ books and some ANZAC classics such as ANZAC Ted and ANZAC Biscuits. The students had been exploring a range of inferencing skills with these texts, drawing connections from the families of ANZACS and those who served, to then things in the current day that hold powerful meaning. Through the use of texts students have also started to investigate the importance of community. This investigation will lead into an inquiry unit for the term where students will explore and create their own community.

Well if that wasn’t enough excitement in the classroom and only 2 weeks in we also…

Pushed ourselves to the limits on Athletics day, running, jumping and throwing our way to success. We had the privilege of hearing a retired serviceman recount the story and the importance of the history of the ANZACS. And yes, we finally finished our classroom chapter book ‘The Witches’ and the students are very excited to compare and contrast the text and the film.
