Inside the four walls of Grade 5

The first few weeks of Term 1 have flown by, and our Year 5 students have settled beautifully into their new routines! It has been wonderful to see them embracing new learning opportunities, reconnecting with friends, and stepping up to the challenges of their first year as senior students of the school. Their enthusiasm and positive attitudes are setting the tone for a fantastic year ahead!
In Literacy, students have been focusing on Descriptive Language, Figurative Language, and Persuasive Devices. They have explored how vivid descriptions and literary techniques can enhance their writing, making it more engaging and expressive.
Ally - “This task was really fun. I enjoyed it very much because we all got to choose an idea of what we wanted to write.”
Olivia - “I liked how I used my figurative language in my paragraph.”
In Maths, our focus has been on Place Value, with an emphasis on renaming, multiples, factors, square and triangular numbers, and index laws. Students have been deepening their understanding of number properties and developing their problem-solving skills through engaging tasks and discussions.
As part of our Healthy, Happy Communities Thrive Concept focus, students have been introduced to the topic of global citizenship and redefining democracy. Through class discussions and activities, they explored what it means to be an active, responsible member of a global community and how democratic values shape societies worldwide. This week we voted on a class SRC.
We have also had some exciting special events over the past two weeks! On Tuesday, 11th February, our students participated in ESafety Day, where they learned valuable lessons about staying safe online. On Monday, 17th February, we embraced the spirit of kindness with a Random Act of Kindness activity, spreading positivity throughout our school community. Additionally, 12 of our students had the wonderful opportunity to take part in JMSS (John Monash Science School) Mini Mathematicians and Little Scientists workshops, where they engaged in hands-on learning and problem-solving experience.
Chloe - “I liked that we can all participate in it and that I can use it in the future.”
We are incredibly proud of the way our Year 5 students have embraced their learning and all the opportunities available to them. With so many exciting experiences still to come, we look forward to seeing them continue to grow, support one another, and make the most of this special year at Highvale Primary!
