SAKGP Garden and Kitchen Programme
News - from Chris and Mel in the kitchen & garden
Our cooking and gardening classes are each Tuesday
We would love to have more volunteers in both the garden and kitchen classes.
No garden or kitchen skills required, enthusiasm to support the students as they learn is all you need.
If you would like to know more, come into the office and see Chris (Principal)
In Cooking this week class P/1 made Alphabet Grissini and enjoyed them with Zucchini Soup.
From the garden we used chives, parsley, zucchini, greens and green onions. We also used Dried oregano and Celery Salt made last year.
This was the first cooking session for Grade Prep students so Grade 1 students paired up with a Prep student to help them put on their aprons and show them how to wash their hands.
In the first activity, each student made Alphabet Grissini (Italian bread stick) using the letter of their first name. Students learnt how to knead their ball of dough and keep kneading until the dough was very smooth and warm. We added fresh herbs (chives and parsley) to the dough by rolling the dough in the herbs and kneading it again.
Next they learnt how to roll out their dough into a thin sausage, making sure it was even and thin enough. They then had fun turning their dough sausage into their letter. Some students had to cut and join their dough, some students could use their long dough sausage to make their letter. As Marcus was at a Professional Learning session, Sarah from year 4/5 was with the class. Sarah and Grade 1s helped the Grade Preps when they needed it, to join their shapes. Once everyone was happy with their letters, some students decided to add dried oregano and celery salt to the top of their letter. Each student then carefully transferred their dough letter onto the baking trays. We baked the Alphabet Grissini during recess so it would be cool enough to eat in the next cooking session.
After recess, Preps and Grade 1s worked together with Sarah to learn how to set the table ready for us to share our cooking. Matilda and some Grade 1s went out to the garden to collect some beautiful zinnias to decorate the tables.
The Zucchini soup was made from the zucchini, herb and onion mixture left over from Grade 4/5 cooking last week and some extra Lebanese zucchini harvested from the garden. Chris used the stick blender to make it smooth and creamy.
It was good to see the students wait while everyone was served their soup and use their manners while they enjoyed the Zucchini Soup and their Alphabet Grissini.
While we were eating, everyone had fun sharing their thoughts about the soup and Grissini, here are some of the comments.
Nicholas said the soup 1000 out of 1000 and double thumbs up. And the bread is the same. I want the recipe! he said.
Atlas said the soup and his A Grissini were 20/20
Aly said I loved them both together - 100/100
Odette said she dipped her GF Grissini in the Zucchini soup and loved the taste.
Matilda licked the plate it was so good!
It was a fantastic first cooking session, well done Grade P/1 and thanks Sarah!
