The Importance of Being on Time for School

At Mitcham Primary School, we really value the importance of starting the school day on time. Arriving ready for class to start at 8:45am ensures that students can settle in, connect with their classmates, and be ready for a day of learning.

When students arrive late, they miss valuable learning time and can feel unsettled, which impacts their ability to engage with lessons. The first session of the day at MPS is usually Literacy instruction, especially in the Junior grades, and we want all students to benefit and be present for this phonics and reading instruction. Being on time also helps build good habits around responsibility and punctuality – skills that benefit children throughout their school years and beyond.

To help with routines:

  • Prepare school bags, lunches, and uniforms the night before
  • Set an alarm to allow enough time for breakfast and getting ready
  • Consider a morning routine chart to help children follow the steps to getting ready
  • Aim to arrive at school at least 10 minutes before the bell. The gates open at 8:30am and this is a great opportunity for students to meet their friends and play before class.

Thank you for your support in ensuring that all students have a smooth and positive start to their school day!
