Grade 2

Explore the Learning in Grade 2

Literacy

In Literacy, students will continue their Core Knowledge unit, 'Ancient China' in Week 7 and 8. As part of this, the students will learn about the teachings of Confucius, The Great Wall of China and Chinese inventions such as printing. In Syntax and Grammar lessons, students will look at identifying and defining adjectives.

Phonics, Handwriting and Reading Fluency

The students are currently working on learning to read and write c/c/v/c words (c - consonant, v- vowel). Examples of these words include clap, grin and skip. They are continuing to work on correct letter formation for words linked to those taught in phonics. The students will continue to revise the sounds taught in the previous unit (/c/v/cc/) through repeated reading in Fluency each day.  The students have also begun reading decodable books with taught sounds. Starting this week, students will take home a book pouch with a decodable reader in it. The readers are intended to be easy for the students to read, as they only contain words with taught sounds. The purpose of the take-home readers is for students to develop their reading fluency, expression and confidence. They will keep the same text all week and no record needs to be kept of what they have read. Please send the students' book pouches back to school every Monday and we will give them a new book to take home.

Numeracy

The students will be working on consolidating their knowledge of time, comparing 3 digit numbers, regrouped place value facts for 2 digit numbers, 2D shapes and counting equal groups.
