Literacy
In Literacy, students have continued to work on their Core Knowledge unit, 'Continents, Countries and Maps.' In Week 7 and 8, students will learn about North America and South America. The students will identify Canada, Mexico, Brazil and the Amazon Rainforest on a map.
Phonics, Handwriting and Reading Fluency
The students are currently working on learning to read and write the spellings for the sound /oe/. They are continuing to work on correct letter formation for words linked to those taught in phonics. The students will continue to revise the sounds taught in the previous unit (/ee/) through repeated reading in Fluency each day. The students have also begun reading decodable books with taught sounds. Starting this week, students will take home a book pouch with a decodable reader in it. The readers are intended to be easy for the students to read, as they only contain words with taught sounds. The students may need assistance reading each sound then blending the word together to read the whole word eg. c-a-t, cat. The purpose of the take-home readers is for students to develop their reading fluency and confidence. They will keep the same text all week and no record needs to be kept of what they have read. Please send the students' book pouches back to school every Monday and we will give them a new book to take home.
Numeracy
The students will be working on consolidating their knowledge of addition facts and number bonds, determining the missing whole from number bonds, ordinal number, time and comparing 2 digit numbers.
