Literacy
In Literacy, students have continued to work on their Core Knowledge unit, 'Let's Explore our World.' In Week 7 and 8, students will complete a review of all of the continents they have learned about so far: Asia, Africa, North America, South America and Europe. The students will then move onto learning about Antarctica and Australia.
Phonics, Handwriting and Reading Fluency
The Preps have now completed the second set of sounds in Phonics Plus: m, o, d, g, f, c. The students have been taught to read these sounds, write the letters and segment and blend short words and nonwords using these sounds and previously taught sounds, such as mog, fit and cad.
The Preps will now move onto the third set of sounds in Phonics Plus and work on these over the next two weeks. These sounds include: k, e, r, u The high frequency words that will be taught are: my, are, was.
They will continue to revise the sounds taught in Sets 1 and 2 through repeated reading in Fluency each day. The students have also begun reading decodable books with taught sounds. Starting this week, students will take home a book pouch with a decodable reader in it. The readers are intended to be easy for the students to read, as they only contain words with taught sounds. The students may need assistance reading each sound then blending the word together to read the whole word eg. c-a-t, cat. The purpose of the take-home readers is for students to develop their reading fluency and confidence. They will keep the same text all week and no record needs to be kept of what they have read. Please send the students' book pouches back to school every Monday and we will give them a new book to take home.
Numeracy
The Prep students are learning to write numerals to 9 and count objects to 9. They are also learning about position and ordinal number, subitising and 2D shapes.
SWPBS
The Preps have loved working with their Buddies each alternate Wednesday afternoon. The Grade 6 Buddy Leaders have done a fantastic job of creating a fun activity for everyone to participate in. On the alternate Wednesday afternoon, our Grade 6 SWPBS Leaders will be working with the Preps to teach them about a different component of our Gold Standard Behaviours.
