Science News – Term 1 Wrap-Up

What a fantastic and energising term we’ve had in Science!

In the Junior Primary, we’ve been exploring how different materials change and what happens when we stretch, bend, squash, or twist them. The students had so much fun experimenting with springs, rubber bands, and pipe cleaners — discovering which materials bounce back to their original shape and which ones don’t. Their curiosity and hands-on learning have been such a joy to see!

Over in the Middle and Upper Primary, students have been diving deep into the world of renewable energy. Each student took on a research project, choosing a renewable energy source such as solar, wind, hydro, or geothermal energy. They worked hard to investigate how their chosen energy works and why it’s important for our planet’s future. The presentations they shared with their peers were absolutely brilliant — thoughtful, creative, and well-researched. I’m incredibly proud of the effort, teamwork, and enthusiasm they’ve all shown.

As we wrap up Term 1, I just want to say a huge well done to all our budding scientists. You've shown great curiosity, creativity, and a passion for learning.

I’m very excited for Term 2, where we’ll be entering the fascinating world of chemistry! Get ready for lots of fun experiments, colourful reactions, and exciting discoveries.

Art - Suzie

Students are finishing of their unit of inquiry on sustainability for the term, focussing on caring for the environment through various art forms.  Junior primary are exploring caring for the environment through drama and designing an environmental superhero, middle primary are creating a Stop Motion video with paper cut outs and upper primary are developing scripts to perform to their peers.

PE - Troy

Over the past few weeks, students had been working hard to be best prepared for Sports Day events. We spent a lot of time focusing on the more technical events of high jump, long jump and javelin. We also had practice for the whole school relay, as well as preparing chosen students for district athletics.

For our last lesson, students had SANFL visit and take our lessons to learn about AFL as well as promoting students to engage with our local football clubs. I hope you enjoy some of the snaps of students enjoying the clinics.

Next term, we look forward to engaging with AFL as well as some net games inside as the weather becomes a bit cooler.

Indonesian - Susan

In Indonesian the Reception children have made buku kecil (little books) about the animals from our class story. They have also been learning numbers to 10 using songs and stories in Indonesian. We have made number charts to use at home too.

The year 1, 2, 3 and 4 students have been writing sentences using simple Indonesian word order rules of varying difficulty to describe these animals. It's been wonderful seeing the children apply their understandings and even use words from last year! The year 3/4 class has started using the online program Studystack to revise several topics, including numbers to 100.

Alex's class has been busy writing short role-plays in small groups using the key questions from this term to perform in front of their class. They are aiming to speak with fluency and without looking at the script!

Sallie's class has been busy creating personal profiles for a real or fictitious character....from famous basketballers to wombats! This profile includes all the language structures we have been learning this term. They have also been completing posters of ordinal numbers for our class competition. The students have also been enjoying traditional Indonesian folktales which are a little like our fairytales but with a twist!

Gardening - Jo

Sustainability has been the focus this term. The students now know what whirly gigs are and what they are for, as well as the other sustainable initiatives around the school.

Alex's gardening group finished the term making pizza scrolls.

There were various flavours, toppings and shapes. The verdict was - they were delicious!

Perhaps some will be made in the holidays??
