Empowering Respect and Care

By Glen Rowan Street Kindergarten Educational Team

Each year as an educational team we meet to formulate our year curriculum goals.  This is a collaborative process where each educator contributes by sharing what they believe is essential for children to learn at kindergarten

This year our curriculum goals are...

1. Empower children to respect and care for themselves, others and their environment, by being an active member of the kindergarten community and wider world.

This may include things like;

  • caring for our chickens and plants, and each other
  • making connections with our local community through exploring the environment around Kindergarten

2. Celebrating in culturally responsive ways to ensure a deep sense of belonging and in recognition of each person’s cultural identity. This includes teaching children about our indigenous history.

This may include things like;

  • Celebrating the things that families have told us are important to them
  • Families sharing their special skills and interests with the children
  • Making connections with our local indigenous community

3. For the children to develop the skills to manage the complexities of life, which involves the ability to be curious, ask questions, take safe risks, and problem solve.

This may include things like;

  • navigating our new outdoor play space which challenges the children in a variety of ways
  • educators being responsive to the children’s interests and curiosity by using our planning cycle of notice, recognise and respond
  • educators building relationships with children so they will engage in learning together

4. Supporting children to be effective communicators, which involves conveying, constructing and receiving messages with purpose and confidence.

This may include things like;

  • using a variety of communication methods to support their learning
  • Engaging in reciprocal conversations through their play and areas of interest
  • Providing opprtunities for reading, writing, symbols, music and the arts

5. Support the children to contribute to a sustainable world, through a deeper understanding of environmental, social and economic factors, which seek to meet the needs of the present generation without compromising the needs of future generations.

This may include things like;

  • Helping children to recognise they are part of ecosystems and have a role to play in preserving, protecting and improving the environment
  • Addressing issues of social justice and equity, respect for diversity and inclusion, active citizenship and sense of community
  • Focusing on fair and equitable access to resources, conserving resources and reducing consumption and waste.

These three dimensions are interconnected and necessary for a sustainable world.
