Community Connections

By Vibha Jain, Early Childhood Teacher

At Glen Murrumbeena Kindergarten, we have set up some whole service goals at the beginning of the term. One of the goals is to develop closer connections with the community. We believe that strong community connections create meaningful learning experiences for children. This term, we have been working closely with families and local organizations to enhance our environment and strengthen our sense of belonging.

A highlight of this was our recent Working Bee Day, where families joined us to plant in the front garden with generous donations from Bunnings. This hands-on experience not only beautified our space but also taught children valuable lessons about teamwork, sustainability, and caring for our environment. Seeing families work together, sharing knowledge, and engaging with the children made this event truly special. One family came in and   planted some lettuce and nasturtium seeds at the kinder. The children took an active role in planting the seeds in the big barrels. Recently, a mother came to make watermelon icy poles with the children. Children had great time cutting a watermelon pieces into a healthy treat. It was great hands-on cooking experience which was both educational and fun.

By involving families and the wider community in projects like this, we are fostering a culture of collaboration, responsibility, and shared learning. These experiences support children in developing lifelong skills and reinforce the importance of contributing to and caring for the world around them.

We are grateful for the ongoing support of our families and local partners, and we look forward to continuing to strengthen our community connections.
