Chev Need to Knows

28 March 2025

Dear Parents and Carers,

I trust you are well as we embrace Open Day tomorrow; at the time of writing, we have over 700 people registered to attend and look forward to giving them a warm welcome in this unpredictable autumn weather.

At Chevalier College, Open Day is more than just an opportunity for prospective families to explore our campus - it is a celebration of our vibrant learning community, our values, and the unique educational experience we provide.

We welcome families to tour our beautiful 100-acre grounds, experience our working farm, and witness firsthand the dynamic learning that takes place in classrooms, creative spaces and sporting fields. Open Day allows us to showcase the breadth of opportunities available to students, from our live cattle show and interactive iSTEM displays to our exceptional performing arts programs and mountain bike track. It is a chance for visitors to see the heart of Chevalier College in action.

Beyond showcasing facilities, Open Day highlights what truly makes Chevalier College special - our people. Our students take pride in sharing their experiences, our staff demonstrate their passion for teaching and learning, and our community comes together to extend a warm welcome to those considering joining us. Whether it’s through engaging displays, student-led tours, or the hospitality of Jules Café, Open Day reflects the spirit of connection, growth, and excellence that defines our College.

For our current families, Open Day might prompt a reflection about why you chose Chevalier College for your child’s education. It serves as a reminder of the strong community that has developed for nearly 80 years with the spirit of our MSC charism. We encourage you to share your experiences with others who may be exploring options for their children’s future.

The staff are proud of what we offer at Chevalier College, and Open Day is our way of inviting others to see what makes our school a place where students are known, supported, challenged and inspired to be their best.

We look forward to welcoming all visitors and sharing the Chevalier experience with them.

Monday 28 April: Capabilities required for a changing world by Professor Sandra Milligan

Professor Sandra Milligan is from the University of Melbourne and leads the New Metrics Program of which Chevalier College is a part. Hear from Professor Milligan about the current challenges of traditional metrics, the emerging opportunities, and the development of alternative options like an 'ATAR Plus' to credentialling students for post-school opportunities.  Such an approach balances academic rigour with personal growth, offering a more holistic view of student achievement through a broader recognition of student success. Hear how this new model is positively impacting students, parents and schools, shaping the future of assessment.

Thursday 8 May: Community Forum – Teens, Mobile Phones and Social Media

In light of upcoming legislation banning social media for under 16s, we invite you to a Community Forum. As part of the evening, we will look at the current landscape of the challenges teenagers and their parents face when managing mobile phones and social media.

This event will bring together speakers, round table discussions and a Q&A session, providing a space for parents, educators and community members to commence a conversation about our whole school community strategy in anticipation of the actions required to respond to the upcoming legislation.

📅 Date: Thursday 8 May

🕖 Time: 7.00 – 8.30pm

📍 Location: John Fahey Centre, Chevalier College

We may possibly leave the evening with more questions than answers; however, from the College’s perspective, we will be more informed about our role and responsibilities in this most important area, as well as how we can facilitate a process which sees parents and students understand their roles as well.

Come along to exchange perspectives and contribute to the beginning of a community response to this important issue.

Monday 2 June: Daniel Principe – Talk to parents and carers

We are excited to welcome youth advocate and educator Daniel Principe back to the College on Monday 2 June.  Following a day engaging with our students through his workshop ‘Championing young people in a digital world’, Daniel will also speak to parents and carers in the evening, where he will unpack what the latest academic research reveals about how current social and cultural forces are affecting young people’s wellbeing and their relationships. Daniel will discuss what really matters to young people, and provide clarity and tools to help young people analyse and challenge the culture around them.

We strongly encourage you to come and hear from the person who will have been working with your children that day - this could also prompt important conversations at home around building respectful and empathetic relationships into adulthood.

📅 Date: Monday 2 June

🕖 Time: 7.00 – 8.30pm

📍 Location: John Fahey Centre, Chevalier College.

We anticipate strong interest in these three events, therefore a booking form will be sent shortly to assist us with planning for each evening.

Have a great weekend,

 Heartworks@Chev

Heartworks@Chev will be on Friday 4 April in McGrath Hall (3.30-5.30pm) and is open to all students in Years 7 to 12.

Our social focus will be on fast fashion and will be facilitated by our Stewardship Captains. Students are invited to bring in unwanted clothes (in good condition) to have a clothes swap. One student’s trash may be another student’s treasure and helps reduce what ends up in landfill.

To assist with catering, students will be asked to register their interest in attending through the student daily notices during Weeks 9 and 10.

House Shield Assembly

On Wednesday 2 April, we will be introducing students and staff to our new house shields. This will take place during one of our timetabled fortnightly assemblies.

Office closure

All staff will be attending this assembly and the main office and student services will be closed from 10.00 - 11.15am.

Gift for students

As part of the assembly, students will receive a small gift from the College to boost house spirit, including a house-themed temporary tattoo.  Students will be welcome to apply these “tattoos” on their cheek (like we do for Sacred Heart Day) or on their arms only. They can wear them during the week of the assembly and all “tattoos” must be removed by Monday 7 April.

Removal instructions:  To remove a temporary tattoo, you can use baby oil or olive oil, applying to the tattoo and gently scrubbing with a cloth or cotton pad.  A warm soapy washer will also work.

Student Diary replacements

It is mandatory for students to use their diaries and we thank you for your support with signing the diary weekly and signing the front pages with our College expectations. Diaries that are lost or have unremovable graffiti in them will need to be replaced.

The replacement cost of a diary is $15.  They can be purchased using the link below:

https://www.bpoint.com.au/pay/CHEVALIERCOLLEGELIMITED

If your child requires a replacement diary, pay the $15 using the link above and take a screenshot of the receipt.  Students are to bring the screenshot to Student Services, where their name will be recorded and a replacement diary will be handed out. This will be checked against our records.

College Tote Bag

We are happy to announce that a College Tote Bag will be available for senior students only from Term 2.

The tote bag can be used instead of, or in conjunction with, the College backpack. We strongly recommend that if using the tote bag, devices should be in a case, and/or padded bag. The tote bag will not provide the protection for devices that the backpack does.

All Year 11 students must have either the College backpack or College tote bag from Term 2 onwards.

The price for the tote bag will be $40 and can be purchased from the Chev Shop.  We will advise when stock arrives and allow a period of time for the change over.
