Year Eight

Humanities

In the first weeks of Term Two, Year Eight have been embarking on an inquiry-based approach to the study of Geography.

In weeks one and two, Year Eight have revisited geographical concepts to deepen their understanding of the unit, and began to apply their research skills to learn about and appreciate the cultural significance of the Australian Landscape from Indigenous perspectives, and discover ways in which World Heritage Sites around the world are being protected and celebrated.

In week three and going into week four, Year Eight are diving deeper into the characteristics and connectedness of specific Natural Landscapes, and the impact of urbanisation in different countries around the world through the lens of sustainability.

Mathematics

We are excited to share with you the upcoming focus in our Year 8 Maths curriculum. Over the next few weeks, our students will be delving into the fascinating world of measurement in geometry, with a specific focus on the area of quadrilaterals, circles, and ellipses.

Exploring Quadrilaterals:

Students will begin by mastering the concepts of area measurement for various types of quadrilaterals, including squares, rectangles, parallelograms, trapezoids, and rhombuses. Through hands-on activities and problem-solving tasks, they will deepen their understanding of how to calculate the area of these shapes using appropriate formulae.

Diving into Circles:

Moving on to circular shapes, students will learn about the relationship between the radius, diameter, and circumference of a circle. They will explore the concept of pi (π) and its significance in calculating the circumference and area of circles. Through interactive lessons and engaging exercises, students will develop the skills to tackle circle-related problems with confidence.

Unraveling the Mysteries of Ellipses:

Finally, students will venture into the world of ellipses, a fascinating shape with unique properties. They will learn about the major and minor axes, eccentricity, and how to determine the area of an ellipse. By analysing real-world examples and participating in collaborative tasks, students will gain a deeper appreciation for the intricacies of this curved shape.

Throughout this unit, our goal is not only to equip students with the necessary mathematical skills but also to foster their curiosity and critical thinking abilities.

Thank you

Spanish

¡Hola a todos!

It has been an exciting month in Year Eight Spanish classes! We have dedicated the past few weeks to reinforcing vocabulary associated with family members, and our students have been doing an excellent job!

In addition to reviewing family vocabulary, we have also been learning how to describe our physical appearance. Students have been honing their skills in creatively describing themselves and their relatives.

Looking ahead, we have our end-of-unit assessment scheduled for next week. The students will be challenged to craft a storybook about their families; detailing themselves, family members, and pets. This task will allow them to demonstrate everything they have learned over the past few weeks.

We're excited to see the stories Year Eight students will create and how they will apply their vocabulary and description skills.

¡Hasta pronto!

Rugby Army

It was with great pleasure this week, that we unveiled The Rugby Army; a rugby program tailored for our middle years program. The program not only caters for the community on a cultural level, but builds on vital life skills such as, teamwork, discipline, competition and resilience.

We have seen an overwhelming number of applications after our first engaging session with the rugby trained Isabelle Dyson.

Isabelle runs a professional and highly organised session ensuring each student gains the maximum of their potential. This is an incredible opportunity for students to develop in all facets of life.

Music:

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We are thrilled to share with you the exciting news and developments happening in our music program this term! It has been a time of incredible growth, learning, and musical exploration for our students, and we couldn't be more proud of their achievements.

In the music classroom, our students have been making great use of the classroom instruments, immersing themselves in the world of music and honing their skills. From mastering the basics of rhythm and melody to delving into more complex musical arrangements, our students have shown remarkable dedication and enthusiasm for learning how to play their instruments.

One of the highlights of this term has been the introduction of song charts, which have provided our students with valuable opportunities to work collaboratively and creatively as they navigate through different musical compositions. From deciphering chord progressions to interpreting musical notation, our students have embraced the challenge with enthusiasm and determination, demonstrating impressive progress and growth along the way.

In addition to our classroom activities, our instrumental program has also gotten off to a fantastic start this term! With the arrival of our new instrumental teacher, Mr. Smith, our students have been buzzing with excitement and anticipation. Under Mr. Smith’s guidance and expertise, our instrumental program is flourising, and our students have begun to make tremendous strides in their musical journey.

The energy and enthusiasm surrounding the instrumental program are palpable, with students eagerly embracing the opportunity to learn and develop their musical talents. From mastering new techniques on the drums and guitar to exploring the intricacies of piano and voice, our students have shown incredible dedication and enthusiasm for their chosen instruments.

As we reflect on the achievements and progress of our students this term, we are filled with pride and excitement for the future of our music program. We are grateful for the support and encouragement of our parents and guardians, whose support has played a crucial role in the success of our students.

We look forward to continuing our musical journey together, exploring new horizons, and creating beautiful music along the way. Thank you for your continued support, and here's to many more musical adventures in the days ahead!

Warm regards,

Rex Sutton.
