Year Seven

Humanities

As we delve deeper into our geography unit, we find ourselves captivated by the intricate web of water that sustains life on our planet. In our recent explorations, we have learned that the water cycle relies on certain natural processes to keep it going. These are evaporation, condensation, precipitation and collection. Each plays a vital role in maintaining Earth's delicate balance. Furthermore, did you know that the fresh water we have access to on Earth is less than 3%?

In Year 7 we have come to appreciate the profound significance of water in shaping societies throughout history. For instance, the Indigenous Australians, whose intricate knowledge of water sources and management allowed them to thrive in some of the most arid landscapes on Earth. Did you know that the Indigenous Australians protected freshwater pools and natural wells by covering them with slabs of flat rock and branches?

As we continue our journey through geography, let us remain steadfast in our commitment to understanding and preserving the precious resource that is water. Together, we can really make a difference.

Senior Volleyball Team

This Friday, May 10th, at the Melbourne Sports Centres - MSAC, our senior boys and girls volleyball teams make their inaugural appearance! Our talented Year Seven players Eseta, Layla, Aaleahya, Ava, Tara, Justus, Koen, and Naz, will be making their senior debut competing in the Year Eight division. This marks a special milestone in our school's sporting journey. Let's rally behind them with cheers and support as they showcase their skills and sportsmanship on the grand stage. Go Saltwater!

Mathematics

In Mathematics, we have been extremely busy working our way through a variety of chance concepts. Year Seven students have been delving into the exciting world of probability. They've been learning to identify sample space and understand theoretical and experimental probability, through the use of real-world examples. Students have been recording their findings in fractions, decimals, and percentages, giving them a solid foundation in numerical representation.

As part of their learning journey, students embarked on a creative project, Candy Chance. Armed with Skittles and a whole lot of creativity, students delved into theoretical and experimental probability, complimentary events, and even had the opportunity to challenge themselves with two and three-step chance experiments (with and without replacement). But it wasn't just about chance – students also honed their data skills by incorporating pie charts and bar graphs into their posters. To top it off, students self-assessed their progress using a rubric, evaluating not just the content but also the presentation and effort they put into their pieces.

Looking ahead, Year Seven students are gearing up for their next adventure, Using Units of Measurement. In this upcoming unit, students will tackle how to convert units of measurement, from length to capacity and beyond. They'll explore the formulas for calculating the area of rectangles, triangles, and parallelograms, applying their newfound knowledge to solve a variety of worded problems. But the learning doesn't stop there – students will also dive into the realm of volume, using their understanding of area to calculate the volume of rectangular prisms and more.

Rugby Army

It was with great pleasure this week, that we unveiled The Rugby Army; a rugby program tailored for our middle years program. The program not only caters for the community on a cultural level, but builds on vital life skills such as, teamwork, discipline, competition and resilience.

We have seen an overwhelming number of applications after our first engaging session with the rugby trained Isabelle Dyson.

Isabelle runs a professional and highly organised session ensuring each student gains the maximum of their potential. This is an incredible opportunity for students to develop in all facets of life.

Wood Technology

Year Seven students have begun working their way through the various stages of the Design Cycle and creating their designed solution the “Project Cerberus”. Students were provided a design brief which outlined the need for the lamp, some constraints and considerations when building the project, and other background information to build the solution.

With this information they then began using their knowledge of Safe Operating Procedures of various hand tools to create their project.

Music:

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We are thrilled to share with you the exciting news and developments happening in our music program this term! It has been a time of incredible growth, learning, and musical exploration for our students, and we couldn't be more proud of their achievements.

In the music classroom, our students have been making great use of the classroom instruments, immersing themselves in the world of music and honing their skills. From mastering the basics of rhythm and melody to delving into more complex musical arrangements, our students have shown remarkable dedication and enthusiasm for learning how to play their instruments.

One of the highlights of this term has been the introduction of song charts, which have provided our students with valuable opportunities to work collaboratively and creatively as they navigate through different musical compositions. From deciphering chord progressions to interpreting musical notation, our students have embraced the challenge with enthusiasm and determination, demonstrating impressive progress and growth along the way.

In addition to our classroom activities, our instrumental program has also gotten off to a fantastic start this term! With the arrival of our new instrumental teacher, Mr. Smith, our students have been buzzing with excitement and anticipation. Under Mr. Smith’s guidance and expertise, our instrumental program is flourising, and our students have begun to make tremendous strides in their musical journey.

The energy and enthusiasm surrounding the instrumental program are palpable, with students eagerly embracing the opportunity to learn and develop their musical talents. From mastering new techniques on the drums and guitar to exploring the intricacies of piano and voice, our students have shown incredible dedication and enthusiasm for their chosen instruments.

As we reflect on the achievements and progress of our students this term, we are filled with pride and excitement for the future of our music program. We are grateful for the support and encouragement of our parents and guardians, whose support has played a crucial role in the success of our students.

We look forward to continuing our musical journey together, exploring new horizons, and creating beautiful music along the way. Thank you for your continued support, and here's to many more musical adventures in the days ahead!

Warm regards,

Rex Sutton.
