Year Four

Dear Year Four Families,

Our students are thriving in the classroom and doing their best to invest in their learning journey.

Unit of Inquiry

We are delving into the world of renewable and non-renewable resources whilst developing our ability to identify keywords and ideas from texts and media. Further exploration into the distribution of resources led us down a geographical path, where students developed a deeper understanding of the bigger picture.  By connecting new information learned to their prior knowledge, they were able to synthesise and formulate statements connecting these concepts to the Central Idea, 'Distribution of finite resources may lead to conflict.'

Literacy

Prepare to be persuaded as the students in Year 4 are mastering devices and themes that will convince a cobbler to buy a pair of shoes! Students have read, identified and written a range of arguments over the past two weeks, consolidating learning through practise.  After selecting a topic of interest that reflects their point of view and voice, students worked towards improving their personal goals related to writing a persuasive text.

Mathematics

The Year 4's have continued to explore strategies that include addition and subtraction in order to solve worded problems. This has required students to identify the key information in a problem, understand what is required, and then, whilst accessing and utilising prior knowledge around number facts, applying strategies to solve problems.

Students have also begun to consider data displays by viewing and interpreting a variety of graphs. We have looked at the purpose of collecting data, experimented with ways in which to collect it, represent it and interpret it. Students applied their understanding by choosing a relevant question that warranted investigation, and following through on the entire process.
