Year One

2024

Dear Year One Community,

Welcome to our latest edition of the Year One school newsletter, where we highlight the fantastic progress and achievements of our young learners. We would like to thank all those families who were able to attend our Student-Led conferences in Week 3. It was a fantastic event and we loved seeing the students taking pride in their learning and development so far in Year One. We appreciate your time and ongoing support of your child’s learning at Saltwater College.

In Reading, students have continued to deepen their understanding of different texts by making text connections as they are reading. Students are becoming more confident in making text-to-self, text-to-text, and text-to-world connections when listening to a story and while doing their independent reading. This not only builds their comprehension skills but their enjoyment of reading.

In Writing, students have continued to work on recount writing. Students have been engaging in meaningful language experiences, so they have exciting things to write about. Students are beginning to structure their recounts by using language such as ‘first, next, then, and lastly’, to sequence their writing.

In Mathematics, we have started investigating the operation of Addition. Students are deepening their number knowledge and exploring the different strategies that can be used to solve addition problems. When working with worded problems, students have been following the RUCSAC model – Read, Underline, Choose, Solve, Answer, and Check to support them in their problem-solving.

In Inquiry, students are working through our second inquiry unit ‘Who We Are’ by exploring the concept of positive relationships and how we establish and maintain these relationships within our families, friendships, and time at school. Students are learning to identify the qualities and actions that we show and respond to in others. This is supporting students' social skills development and reinforcing positive forms of communication.

All Year One classes engaged in a Cyber Safety incursion where they learnt important skills about how to stay safe online.
