Homework @ SMDP

We're excited to announce a new approach to homework across all year levels at our school. We believe homework, when aligned with classroom learning, can be a valuable tool to reinforce concepts, develop independent learning skills, and cultivate a love for knowledge.

While research suggests the quantity of homework has minimal bearing on academic achievement, we strongly advocate for any and all homework being of quality and aligned with classroom instruction.

Research shows developing crucial habits and time management skills during primary school equips students not only with strong academic foundations but also with the essential tools to manage their time effectively and cultivate a lifelong love of learning as they move through their schooling.

A Personalised Approach

We understand that each year level has unique needs and learning styles. Therefore, homework will look different across all levels. You'll see a gradual increase in time and complexity as students progress through the grades. However, one thing remains constant - all homework will directly connect to and extend the learning happening in the classroom.

Why the Change?

We've carefully considered the feedback from parents and teachers, and delved deeply into research on effective learning practices. We believe this new approach will offer several benefits:

  • Deeper understanding: By revisiting and practicing concepts taught in class, students will solidify their learning and build a stronger foundation.
  • Enhanced engagement: Personalized and relevant homework can spark curiosity and a genuine interest in exploring topics further.
  • Stronger partnership: Collaboration between teachers and parents becomes easier when everyone is working towards the same learning goals.

Next Steps:

We are in the process of planning what homework will look like for each year level and this will be communicated by your child's classroom teacher over the coming weeks.

Supporting Your Child:

We know you play a crucial role in your child's educational journey. Here are some ways you can support them with their homework:

  • Create a dedicated study space: This should be a quiet, well-lit area free from distractions.
  • Establish a routine: Set regular times for homework each day, helping your child develop time management skills.
  • Be a guide, not a teacher: Offer encouragement and assistance, but avoid doing the work for them. Let them ask questions and work through difficulties independently.

Feel free to reach out to your child's teacher if you have any questions.

When to wear sports uniform

Students participate in specialist lessons across a fortnight timetable. This involves Physical Education and Sport lessons where sports uniform is required.

Here are the days classes need to wear the school sports uniform. A reminder this is the only time students wear this uniform and sports shoes. At all other times Summer school uniform should be worn.
