The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9.
The results can assist teachers by providing additional information to support their professional judgement about students’ levels of literacy and numeracy attainment and progress.
NAPLAN tests are one aspect of each school’s assessment and reporting process, and do not replace the extensive, ongoing assessments made by teachers about each student’s performance. Each teacher will have the best insight into their students’ educational progress.

Wherever possible, schools will organise for individual students who are absent at the time of testing to complete missed tests at another time during the test window.
Parents or carers may withdraw their child from the tests to address issues such as religious beliefs and philosophical objections to testing. The principal may also approve a student exemption for a student who has a:
The Disability Standards for Education (2005) set out the rights of a student with a disability in relation to education and the obligations of school education providers under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992. Within this legislation, the definition of disability is broad and includes physical, intellectual, psychiatric, sensory, neurological and learning disabilities.
