Expectations

The Quaker values outlined in the Purpose and Concerns encourage the development of self-discipline, respect and tolerance in all members of the residential community. Courtesy and consideration are expected at all times to help build a positive social environment.
Standards of behaviour in Walker House are determined for the benefit and welfare of all. Students are expected to observe daily routines and to contribute to the community by conscientiously completing their share of household chores. Expectations for student behaviour are based on:
- issues of safety for all students and staff
- respect for staff, students, and the environment
- development of personal responsibility.
All The Friends’ School Polices and Guidelines apply to students at Walker House. Parents and students must read the applicable Middle School & Senior School Handbook so that they are clearly aware of the expectations for behaviour and applicable consequences where a student breaches the expected guidelines.
Of particular importance are the following:
- Purpose and Concerns
- Rights and Responsibilities
- Supportive School Environment
- Discrimination and Harassment
- Behaviour Management and Due Process
- Computer Use
- Uniform Expectations
- Drug Policy and Guidelines
- Academic Honesty
- Occupational Health and Safety
- Grievance Policy and Procedures
- Evacuation and Lockdown Procedures.
Walker House: Expectations and Responsibilities
At Walker House, the safety, wellbeing, and respectful relationships within our community are paramount. Friends’ follows the legislative & regulatory requirements for boarding schools in Australia as outlined in the AS 5725:2015 document, “Boarding Standard for Australian School’s & Residences” (the Standard). To support this, there are three serious expectations that all students are required to follow:
- Substance use: Students are not permitted to possess or use alcohol, cigarettes, e-cigarettes, vaping paraphernalia, or illegal drugs. This includes returning to Walker House after having used any such substances.
- Respect for privacy: Boys are not permitted on the girls’ level, and girls are not permitted in boys’ rooms at any time.
- Leave procedures: Students are expected to remain in Walker House unless they have received permission to leave. They should inform the duty staff member of where they are going, when they expect to return, and sign out in the appropriate way.
Any breach of these serious expectations may place a student’s enrolment in both Walker House and the School at risk.
We recognise that students are learning to make responsible choices. When expectations are not met, they will be supported to take responsibility for their actions. Responses may include:
- Using free time to complete overdue academic work
- Making restitution for property that has been damaged
- Offering a genuine apology or taking steps to repair relationships
- Contributing to the community through service
All significant incidents will be documented on the student’s file. Where a student does not respond to guidance or support, they may be asked to complete additional service or have certain privileges adjusted. Repeated failure to follow leave procedures or maintain academic progress may lead to limitations on leave opportunities.
Families will be informed by the Director or Assistant Director of Residence if there are serious or repeated breaches of expectations. In these situations, a Behaviour Contract may be introduced to provide clear guidance and support for the student.
In some cases, a serious single incident or a pattern of unsatisfactory behaviour may lead to a review of enrolment. As outlined in the School’s conditions of enrolment, the Principal retains the authority to suspend or withdraw a student’s enrolment where there is sufficient cause.
These expectations are shared in the spirit of care and clarity. By working together with honesty, accountability and compassion, we aim to build a safe and supportive community for all.
