Over the past 3 weeks, our graduating year 6 students all enjoyed their final Kitchen/Garden sessions at Kingswood. We reflected over their learning, remembering the many highlights and favourite dishes (and the not so favourite!) during their time in the program. They have developed a passion for cooking and quite sophisticated taste buds, a firm foundation for growing positive food habits for life!

Throughout the year, in the SAKG program we talk to the students about gratitude and the many different ways to show it. We show gratitude to our beautiful garden by respecting the garden and the living creatures within it and we also do our very best not to waste by using what we have when we have it.

Our students stop during sharing time to show gratitude to our wonderful volunteers, whom without, they would not be able to experience the kitchen component of the program. This week for our final sessions, students from 4B and 4C worked hard to create some delicious food to share at our annual volunteer thank you lunch. Together we made Lavosh crackers beautifully seasoned with rosemary, fennel, sesame and poppy seeds then baked until golden and crisp. We served these tasty crackers with Beetroot dip and as a vegan option, creamy lemon and white bean dip.

This term the students have prepared posters, thank you notes and Christmas cards and most recently, Gingerbread cookies as the final gift to our volunteers for 2023.

On Tuesday Bianca and I were able to show our gratitude by serving up a delicious lunch where our volunteers were able to sit back and just enjoy. On behalf of our students, Bianca and myself, we say thank you for all of your time, patience and dedication to the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program.

I would like to wish all of our families a very safe and happy Christmas and an amazing 2024.

Happy cooking!
