Monash Tech School Excursion YR 9&10
Over the past few weeks, students in Years 8 and 9 have had the opportunity to participate in engaging programs at Monash Tech School, developing their understanding of technology, innovation and problem-solving.
Year 9 – Super Cyber
Year 9 students attended the Super Cyber program, where they explored a range of real-world cyber security challenges and the impact technology has on everyday life.
The day began with an activity highlighting the challenges some people face when using technology. Students considered how difficult it can be for people to navigate digital tools, including tasks such as sending emails and identifying spam messages and viruses.
Students then worked in teams to investigate how hackers can gain access to passwords. Through a series of challenges, they experienced first-hand the importance of strong cyber security practices. Two of our teams successfully completed the challenge before the others, and the use of robotics added an exciting and engaging element to the activity.
To add onto this content, a second task focused on workplace cyber security, where students examined how unauthorised access can occur when passwords or access credentials are shared. This activity demonstrated that even systems with strong security measures can be compromised when individuals fail to follow appropriate security protocols.
Year 8 – SuperProducts
Year 8 students participated in the two-day SuperProducts program, which challenged them to design, develop and market an innovative product.
On the first day, students worked in teams to create a product designed to improve everyday life. They rotated through three learning activities. In one session, students designed their product and used a Cricut machine to create a three-dimensional prototype. In another, they explored coding and learnt the importance of writing precise instructions to achieve a desired outcome. The third activity introduced students to bioplastics, where they created a sustainable plastic-like material using seaweed and other compounds.
On the second day, students brought together everything they had learnt by refining, presenting and marketing their product ideas.
Across both year levels, it was fantastic to see students embrace new challenges, apply their creativity and critical thinking skills, and work collaboratively with their peers.
