At Brighton Beach Primary School, we believe that wellbeing is not something that is taught in isolation. Rather, it is developed through a carefully planned and consistent approach that supports students to build the knowledge, skills and dispositions they need to thrive both at school and beyond.
This year, we have implemented a clear wellbeing focus for each term: Community in Term 1, Anti-Bullying in Term 2, Inclusion and Disability Awareness in Term 3, and Anti-Racism in Term 4. These themes have been intentionally selected to reflect our school values and to support the development of respectful, empathetic and socially responsible young people.
As part of her Mental Health in Primary Schools (MHiPS) and Wellbeing role, Anna Remfry is currently leading the development of a whole-school wellbeing scope and sequence. This work aims to ensure that wellbeing learning is explicitly taught, developmentally appropriate and builds progressively from Prep to Year 6. Through carefully planned lessons and regular circle time discussions, students engage with a common theme across each term while exploring concepts and skills that are tailored to their age and stage of development. This creates important throughlines across the school, ensuring that key wellbeing concepts are revisited and strengthened over time.
Our wellbeing curriculum is underpinned by two evidence-based programs: Respectful Relationships and The Resilience Project. Together, these programs form our Tier 1 approach to wellbeing, providing all students with opportunities to develop emotional literacy, empathy, resilience, positive relationships and strategies for managing challenges. These programs are embedded within classroom practice and provide a strong foundation for our broader wellbeing work.
To further enrich student learning, our termly themes are supported through targeted incursions, special events and community partnerships. Earlier this term, students participated in Action Education's Backflips Against Bullying program, which reinforced important messages around respectful behaviour, bystander action and seeking support. Throughout the year, we also partner with Inform and Empower to provide students, staff and families with access to current research and practical strategies to support wellbeing, respectful relationships and online safety.
By taking a proactive and preventative approach to wellbeing, we are creating a shared language and understanding across our school community. Most importantly, we are equipping students with the knowledge, confidence and skills they need to build positive relationships, celebrate diversity and contribute to a safe, inclusive and respectful school environment.
