Year 5/6 - Senior Unit

Halfway Through the Year – Can You Believe It?

Our extremely busy term has come to an end, and it’s hard to believe we are already halfway through the year! A huge thank you to the parents and grandparents who volunteered their time to support our swimming program at KSAC. Your help was greatly appreciated.

Today, our Year 5 students are enjoying a High School Experience Day at Gisborne Secondary College, while our Year 6 students remain at school. Looking ahead, the Year 6s will soon begin planning for graduation and their end-of-year fundraising activities. More information about these exciting events will be shared next term.

Over the past few weeks, much of our Literacy learning has focused on researching and writing Information Reports about extreme weather events. In Mathematics, students have been developing their understanding of Order of Operations (BODMAS) and practising converting between 12-hour and 24-hour time.

Our Dress-Up Day yesterday was a fantastic success and a wonderful way to raise money for MND. The school was filled with hippies, minions, bananas, cowboys, animals, and many other creative characters! The effort students put into their costumes was impressive, and it was great to see everyone having so much fun while supporting an important cause.

Here are a selection of photos.  There's more pics on the Jnr School Council page.

A reminder that our Extreme Weather Expo will be held tomorrow, Friday 26 June, in our classrooms from 9:15am to 10:00am. Students will proudly showcase the models they created at home, along with their Information Reports. We hope you can join us and celebrate their hard work.

We have also wrapped up the term with assessment tasks across all learning areas. These assessments have provided valuable opportunities for both students and teachers to reflect on progress made throughout the semester and to begin setting goals for future learning. Thank you to all families who attended Parent-Teacher Conferences this week. We look forward to meeting with the remaining families early next term.

To finish the newsletter, Leo from 5/6M has kindly shared the opening of one of his recent writing pieces. We hope you enjoy reading his work.

Tom and Cassie strolled along the sandy shoreline. The wind whipped at any exposed skin like thousands of tiny needles. They hugged their coats tight, while their dog Rufus shivered at their ankles. Cassie then took off her coat and wrapped it around Rufus like a burrito. Then Tom spotted something on the top of a cliff. A glint of light peeked through the heavy clouds and highlighted it. “Look” said Tom, “Let’s go and see!” “Alright” agreed Cassie, “But after that, we go home.” “Ok!” exclaimed Tom as he grabbed his sister’s hand and started up the hill. The long grass lashed their ankles, but they continued on. Eventually they reached the top and saw what it was. “Wow!” exclaimed Cassie as she approached it….
