Reflection

Living with Courage and Trust.

The readings from last Sunday speak powerfully to the themes of fear, courage, and trust in God’s constant presence. They remind us that even in moments of uncertainty or challenge, we are never alone, and we are called to live with confidence in God’s care.

In the first reading from Jeremiah, we encounter a prophet who is struggling. Jeremiah feels surrounded by opposition and weighed down by fear, yet he ultimately places his trust in the Lord. His words reflect a very human experience moments when we feel overwhelmed, judged, or uncertain about the path ahead. Yet, Jeremiah’s deep faith allows him to proclaim that God is with him like a mighty champion. This reminds us that courage is not the absence of fear, but the decision to trust in God despite it.

The Gospel continues this theme as Jesus reassures his disciples: 'Do not be afraid.' He acknowledges that following him will not always be easy, but he emphasises that each person is precious in God’s eyes, even the hairs on our head are counted. This image speaks of a deeply personal and attentive God who knows and loves each of us completely. In a world that can often feel uncertain or overwhelming, this message calls us to live with confidence and not allow fear to define our choices.

These readings offer an important message for our school community, particularly as students navigate the demands of learning, relationships, and personal growth. Fear, whether of failure, judgment, or the unknown, can sometimes hold us back. However, we are reminded that we are supported, valued, and never alone in our journey.

As we reflect on these messages, we are encouraged to cultivate courage in our daily lives: to stand up for what is right, to persevere through challenges, and to trust in our abilities and in God’s guidance. By doing so, we can approach each new day with hope rather than hesitation.

May we carry this message forward, supporting one another and facing the second half of the year with faith, confidence, and a deep awareness of God’s presence in all that we do.

Prayer

Loving God,

In times when we feel uncertain or afraid,

remind us of Your constant presence in our lives.

Give us the courage to face challenges with confidence

and the strength to trust in Your guidance.

Help us to recognise our worth and the value of those around us,

knowing that we are all deeply loved by You.

May we support one another with kindness, encouragement, and compassion.

Bless our students, especially those preparing for important exams,

with calm minds and confident hearts.

We ask this through Your love and grace.

Amen.

Celebrating Our Touring Groups: Learning Beyond the Classroom

As we move through an exciting time in the school calendar, we take great pride in acknowledging and celebrating our students who are representing the College across a number of outstanding opportunities: the Performing Arts Tour, the Queensland Rugby Tour, and our valued Red Dirt Immersion.

Each of these experiences is a powerful example of learning that extends far beyond the classroom. While academic growth remains central to our mission, we know that some of the most valuable lessons in a young person’s development occur through real-world experiences, where students are challenged, inspired, and shaped in new and meaningful ways.

Our Performing Arts Tour to the UK and Austria offers students the opportunity to immerse themselves in creative expression, collaboration, and performance. Through workshops, rehearsals, and live performances, students refine their skills while gaining confidence and resilience. Engaging with diverse audiences and environments allows them to understand the transformative power of the arts and the importance of discipline, teamwork, and courage in bringing creative visions to life.

The Queensland Rugby Tour provides our young men with invaluable experiences both on and off the field. Competitive matches, high-performance training, and exposure to different playing styles all contribute to their growth as athletes. Just as importantly, the tour strengthens qualities such as sportsmanship, leadership, and mateship. The challenges faced in unfamiliar environments help build adaptability and mental toughness, skills that will serve them well beyond their sporting pursuits.

Our Red Dirt Immersion remains a deeply meaningful and transformative experience. Through this program, students are given the opportunity to engage with remote communities, broadening their understanding of Australia’s cultural landscape and connection with country. It encourages empathy, gratitude, and reflection, as students gain insight into different ways of life and the importance of service, connection, and community. The lessons learned through this immersion often have a lasting impact, shaping perspectives and inspiring a lifelong commitment to making a positive difference. We will share this experience with our brother school Christian Brothers High School Lewisham.

Across all three tours, our students are developing independence, resilience, and a greater awareness of the world around them. These experiences challenge them to step outside their comfort zones, embrace new perspectives, and grow as individuals.

We wish all students involved every success as they embark on these remarkable journeys. May they take full advantage of every opportunity, represent the College with pride, and return enriched by their experiences both in achievement and personal growth.

Finally, we extend our sincere gratitude to the dedicated staff who are accompanying these tours. Your willingness to give your time, energy, and care, often away from your own families is deeply appreciated. Your commitment ensures that our students are supported, guided, and inspired throughout these experiences. These opportunities simply would not be possible without your generosity and professionalism.

We look forward to hearing the stories and celebrating the achievements of all involved upon their return.

Parent/Teacher/Student Meetings for Year 5 – Year 10

Reflecting, Refining, and Resetting for Semester 2

As we approach the end of term, our Parent/Teacher/Student meetings provide a valuable opportunity for reflection, celebration, and forward planning. These conversations are a cornerstone of our learning culture, particularly for students in Years 5–10, as they begin to take increasing ownership of their academic journey.

This process is more than simply reporting on progress, it is a meaningful dialogue between students, parents, and teachers. At its heart is the shared goal of supporting each student to understand where they are in their learning, recognise their strengths, and identify the next steps needed for improvement.

For students in Years 5 - 10, this stage of schooling represents a critical period of development. They are moving beyond foundational skills and beginning to engage more deeply with complex concepts, independent learning, and personal responsibility. Receiving clear, constructive feedback at this point is essential. It helps students build self-awareness and the ability to reflect thoughtfully on their work and habits.

One of the most important aspects of the interviews is the opportunity for students to actively participate in the conversation. When students hear feedback directly and contribute their own reflections, they are better able to connect their effort with outcomes. This engagement fosters a growth mindset encouraging them to view challenges as opportunities for learning rather than obstacles.

The timing of these interviews, at the end of Semester 1, is particularly powerful. It offers a natural checkpoint for students to pause and evaluate their progress against the goals they set earlier in the year. With teacher guidance and parental support, students can identify what has worked well and what might need adjustment.

Parents also play a vital role in this process. Your engagement in the interviews demonstrates to your son that their learning matters and that school and home are working together. By discussing feedback and supporting goal-setting conversations at home, you reinforce the importance of persistence and positive learning behaviours.

We encourage all families to approach these interviews as a collaborative and supportive experience. Celebrate the successes, both big and small, and focus on practical strategies for continued growth. Every student is on their own learning journey, and progress looks different for each individual.

As we look ahead to Semester 2, the insights gained from these conversations will help our students move forward with confidence, clarity, and motivation. By reflecting on feedback and setting purposeful goals, our Year 5–10 students are well positioned to continue building their skills and achieving their personal best.

Thank you for your continued partnership in supporting your son’s learning.

Celebrating our Upstanders

This term, we proudly acknowledge and celebrate our wonderful Upstanders - students who have made a meaningful contribution to building a positive and inclusive culture at St Pius X College. Their actions, both big and small, reflect the values at the heart of our community and demonstrate the true character of the young men we are striving to develop.

An Upstander is someone who chooses to act with courage, integrity, and compassion. They are the students who speak up for others, who show kindness without expectation, and who lead by example in their everyday interactions. Whether it is offering support to a peer, standing against unkind behaviour, or simply taking the time to include others, these students help create a community where everyone feels valued and respected.

What makes our Upstanders so special is that their contributions often go unseen - they are not motivated by recognition, but by a genuine desire to do what is right. Their actions reflect a deep understanding of respect, responsibility, and empathy, and they remind us all of the importance of looking out for one another.

At St Pius X College, we believe that character development is just as important as academic achievement. The example set by our Upstanders shows that we are not only educating students, but forming young men of integrity, compassion, and courage. They are living out the values of our College each day and strengthening the sense of belonging within our community.

We thank and congratulate all of our Upstanders for their outstanding contribution this term. Your actions make a difference, and you inspire others to do the same. Together, you are helping to ensure that St Pius X College remains a place where every individual is respected, supported, and valued.

Reassessing the Term and Refocusing for Success

As we reach the midpoint of the school year and following the Semester 1 Reports, it is an important time for reflection, reset, and renewal. The conclusion of another term provides a valuable opportunity for students to pause and reassess their progress - academically, personally, and in their broader goals for the year. In the busyness of school life, it can be easy to move from task to task without taking stock. However, this moment of reflection is where meaningful growth begins.

Re-evaluating goals is not about starting over, but about refining direction. Students may find that some goals need adjusting, while others may require renewed commitment and focus. Importantly, goal-setting gives purpose to learning.  It clarifies priorities, builds motivation, and provides a roadmap for success. For the second half of the year, clear and achievable goals will help students stay focused, manage their time effectively, and maintain a sense of momentum in their studies.

Goal-setting also encourages resilience. When students identify both their strengths and areas for improvement, they develop a stronger sense of ownership over their learning. This process empowers them to take initiative, seek support when needed, and celebrate incremental progress along the way. As we move into the next term, we encourage all students to take time to write down specific goals, discuss them with teachers or mentors, and commit to regular reflection.  There is a section in student diaries where each student can write their goals for the term.  I strongly encourage all students to use this section of the diary to guide them for Term 3.

A special mention must be made of our Year 12 students as they approach a critical stage in their academic journey. The upcoming Trial HSC Examinations represent a significant milestone and an important opportunity to prepare for the final HSC exams later in the year. We extend our sincere encouragement to all HSC students as they enter this period of focused study and revision. Your hard work, perseverance, and determination are commendable, and we are confident in your ability to achieve your best.

To support our Year 12 cohort, a number of targeted workshops will be held throughout the holiday period. These sessions are designed to provide additional guidance, revision strategies, and subject-specific assistance to strengthen exam readiness. With the continued dedication of our teaching staff and the structured support available, our students are well positioned to approach their Trial examinations with confidence and clarity.

As a school community, we remain committed to supporting every student in achieving their personal best. The second half of the year is filled with opportunity, and with thoughtful goal-setting and sustained effort, it can be a time of significant growth and achievement.

We wish all students a restful break, and to our Year 12 cohort, every success as they prepare for their upcoming Trial HSC Examinations.
