News from the Art Room

Welcome back to another fun and full year in the art room!

The art program is designed by considering the elements and principles of art, which are the fundamental tools and organisational methods used to create and analyse visual art. Elements (line, shape, form, space, color, value, texture) are the basic ingredients, while principles (balance, emphasis, movement, pattern, rhythm, unity/variety, proportion) are how those ingredients are arranged for effect.

This term in Visual Arts, students will be exploring the theme of community and collaboration. Through discussion, drawing, and shared art-making, students will learn how art can tell stories about the people and places that matter to them. Working collaboratively, they will plan and create artworks that reflect teamwork, respect for others’ ideas, and a sense of belonging. Harmony Week in March, Easter and the season of Lent, also lends itself nicely to our community and belonging theme.

Later this term we will begin to spark our curiosities by doing a deep dive into the story of Alice in Wonderland. Students across all year levels will be working on an art piece linked to our school production, that will be used as either a display piece or feature as part of the sets or props in the show.

Art Smocks

Please hand your child’s art smock, clearly named, to their classroom teacher by the end of week 2. Smocks are stored in the classrooms and brought to art class when required. They are compulsory for many of the projects we work on.

Donations

Cardboard panels

If you have a contact or are able to assist with providing some very large cardboard panels for the sets of our school production, could you please get in touch with me as soon as possible.

Props for production

I have a list of props, many of which will be made, but I would also like to source some from local op shops and various places in our community. If you think you could assist with this search for some treasures for our school production, please let me know and I will provide you with the list.

Art Captains

I am thrilled to have a dedicated team of Art leaders this year that will be heavily involved in the preparation of sets and props for our school production, in addition to a range of other activities throughout the year, which support the younger students with their artistic endeavours.

Congratulations to Nancy, Kristian, Anthony, Ella, Max M, Sebastian, Seraphin and Archie.

2026 MACS Creative Arts Exhibition

We are very excited to have our entry accepted into the 2026 MACS Creative Arts Exhibition! This year’s theme is Christ beside me: Walking in the footsteps of Saint Patrick. I am very grateful to Kathryn Ady and the year 6 students who contributed thoughtful input to make this artwork a truly special piece.

The Creative Arts Exhibition will be held during Catholic Education Week at the Catholic Leadership Centre from Sunday 15 March – Saturday 22 March 2026. This event will be open to the public and I will provide further details shortly.

Looking forward to welcoming many parents and carers back to the art room this year in the lead up to school production!
