Term 1 Newsletter
Welcome to 2026! Hoping you have enjoyed some time with your family and your child/children are ready to tackle the new school year. This term we are covering some important topics in class to keep everyone safe whilst being online.
Prep
Students begin their digital journey by identifying what "personal data" is (their name, age, our photo) and acknowledging that some apps "remember" this information. They will develop foundational motor skills using iPads)to create simple content and learn to share their work with a known, supportive audience like their teacher or peers.
Year 1
Students focus on digital safety by identifying personal data and recognizing that websites and apps store this information in the cloud. They will practice independence by accessing school accounts using a recorded username and password. Students will explore basic features of digital tools to locate, create, and share content with a range of familiar audiences.
Year 2:
Students deepen their understanding of digital privacy by discussing why apps store personal data and the importance of keeping it secure. They will refine their login independence using recorded credentials. Progression is shown through their ability to select specific digital tools to create and present content tailored for a particular audience or purpose.
Year 3:
Students transition from recorded logins to memorized passwords. They will learn that passwords must be easy for them to remember but difficult for others to guess. Students will identify the specific data shared in their online profiles and begin discussing potential risks, focusing on privacy settings and stranger awareness.
Year 4:
Students consolidate their security habits by independently managing memorized passwords and articulating the criteria for a strong password. They will critically examine their online profiles, categorizing the types of data stored and evaluating the associated privacy risks of sharing specific information in a public versus private forum.
Year 5:
Students advance to passphrases, learning why unique logins are vital and the risks of "password fatigue" (reusing credentials). They will use digital tools to plan, collaborate, and share content, demonstrating positive online etiquette. A key focus will be the digital footprint, as students consider how the data they share today creates a permanent record.
Year 6:
Students refine their cybersecurity habits by analyzing the risks of password reuse and implementing unique passphrases across multiple platforms. They will act as responsible digital citizens, selecting the most effective tools for collaboration while adhering to ethical online behaviors. Students will critically evaluate the permanence of their digital footprint and apply strict privacy filters when collecting or sharing data.
