Learning in Year 1

We have had a wonderful start to Year 1 in 2026.  Students are excited, teachers are happy and the school is looking fantastic!  The kids have really grown over the break and are feeling ready for the next stage of their learning.

We are conducting a range of assessments over the next couple of weeks to understand where students are at and plan accordingly.  Homework and take home readers should have made their way home in Week 3.

IMPORTANT DATES

  • Wednesday 25th February Parent and Carer Digital Workshop 2pm at GRPS, 6pm online
  • Monday 10th March: Labour Day
  • Thursday 2nd April: Last day of Term One

WHAT WE ARE LEARNING

Literacy

In Literacy we have been learning to read and write whatever we like as we revise our phonograms. We have also been learning how to structure a recount in writing, telling the reader about a series of events in sequential order.

Maths

In Maths we have been learning about collecting data and representing our findings in simple graphs and charts. We are also looking at 2D shape.

Integrated

We have started exploring skills and strategies to be The Best Me I Can Be, including Self Regulation, Kindness and Bravery. Each week we should come home talking about another way to live our best lives.

Wellbeing

In Wellbeing we have been learning about the Zones of Regulation, understanding big emotions and how to be a good friend.

REMINDERS

  • Nude food - On Tuesdays we will tally up the children who come to school with ‘nude’ lunches. This means food with no packaging. We would love to see as many children as possible with rubbish-free lunch boxes.

  • Active Travel - On Wednesdays we will tally up the number of children who walk/skate/ride/scoot all or part of the way to school.  This is to encourage any active travel whenever possible.

  • Children will bring home a Homework Book with spelling word practice sheets just like in Foundation, starting Week 4.  They will also start with ONE reader a week, which is to practice fluency and expression.  You are welcome to read any other types of books as well!  All reading is encouraged!
