Learning in Year 5

The Grade Five students have made a fantastic start to the school year, settling in with enthusiasm and a positive attitude to learning.
Wellbeing
Over the first few weeks, we have been getting to know one another and setting up our classroom routines and expectations. Together, we talked about what makes a great learning space, created expectation charts, and introduced our class reward systems. It has been lovely to see students working together and taking pride in their classroom environment!
Maths
Students have been busy exploring data. They created column graphs to represent their school holiday activities and drew their own line graphs by analysing rainfall data across the school holiday period. We have also begun looking at some NAPLAN-style questions, helping students build confidence and familiarity in a supportive way.
Reading
Our reading sessions have kicked off with the start of our class novels for the term. Students have been making thoughtful predictions about the setting, characters, and themes, as well as writing some thoughtful questions they hope will be answered as the story unfolds.
Writing
Preparing for NAPLAN, students have been diving into narratives. Using the Seven Steps to Writing, students are learning how to structure their stories effectively, develop engaging ideas, and captivate their audience with strong openings and detailed descriptions.
Integrated Studies
We have launched into our first unit, ‘Voices of the People.’ Students have begun exploring government systems, with a particular focus on how Australia’s democratic system operates. This unit is already sparking curiosity and thoughtful discussion about citizenship and civic responsibility.
We are incredibly proud of the way Grade Five has embraced the year so far and can’t wait to see the learning continue!
