Learning in Year 4

Welcome Back!

We’ve had a fantastic start to the year in Year 4! Students have settled in beautifully, building new routines, reconnecting with friends, and showing great enthusiasm for learning. It’s been wonderful to see their positive attitudes, curiosity, and willingness to give new challenges a go.

We’re excited for a year filled with learning, growth, and plenty of fun ahead!

Wellbeing

In Wellbeing, we have enjoyed familiarising themselves with their new journals and kickstarting our URSTRONG Friendology lessons. Our lessons this term will focus on building positive relationships, understanding emotions, and developing strategies to navigate friendships in a respectful and supportive way. Ask your child to share their learning of friendology with you!

Literacy

This term, we will begin our first class novel, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, which we will use to explicitly teach and practise key reading strategies such as making connections, summarising, and making predictions. Students will continue their Spalding lessons, further developing their knowledge of phonograms and spelling rules. We will also strengthen reading skills through daily reading practice, supporting students to become confident and fluent readers.

In writing, we will focus on developing narrative writing skills, with an emphasis on planning, structuring, and elaborating ideas. Students will be introduced to and practise the 7 Steps to Writing Success, working towards the creation of their own picture storybook.

Maths

In Maths, we will begin the term by revising our addition and subtraction knowledge to ensure a solid foundation. Later in the term, we will move on to exploring multiplication and division concepts, building on what the students already know and developing their confidence with these operations.

Homework

Homework has begun for the term. Students will independently complete a weekly spelling practice sheet linked to their in class spelling list, as well as a maths practice sheet based on concepts taught during the week.

Students are also encouraged to read every night and complete one reading summary each week. If your child requires support with any aspect of homework, please don’t hesitate to speak with their classroom teacher.

Reminder: Homework is sent home on a Monday and is due back on Friday for marking.
